Broadcast TV’s nightmare begins as mobile apps dominate prime time

The latest data from analytics firm Flurry research shows that mobile apps are now used by more than 50 million people in America during the most hectic period of the day. And that moment is at 8:00 p.m. — smack in the middle of TV’s prime time. On weekdays, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. is the stretch when mobile apps reach more than 50 million U.S. consumers. This happens to coincide with the time most big broadcast television shows air. It probably is no coincidence that while mobile app usage exploded between 2011 and 2013, the most important prime time shows started imploding. “American Idol” is now only a shadow of its former self; its audience collapsed to just 12 million people last Wednesday. “Survivor” has plunged below 10 million viewers…

The cameras have been set by me and Panasonic … didn’t help for what we need them to do. You are correct about the Fuji lens, the last 1/3 is junk. Below 5.6 the 370’s can’t be focused.

The cameras are good in studio and in a controlled environment. However, no matter how good the setup, they are worthless in variable conditions. We are going to replace the 370’s on our truck and move them into the studio where they make a good image.

We have tried top end glass. The results are a little better, but not worth the $$$. Images are pretty good if the subject is less than 20″ from the camera in stable light.

We purchased five 370’s to be used on our remote truck. The 370 is the worst camera I have ever worked with. I went round and round with Panasonic about the focus issues in a variable lighting environment. Camera is pretty good in a studio environment, but don’t dare leave the F4 -5.6 range and expect to hold focus. If you use the last third of the lens there is no detail in the image. As we can afford it, we will replace the 370’s with other cameras. My crew is very frustrated–Just a miserable experience.

This camera will only acquire a sharp focus when the f-stop is between 4-5.6. The last third of the zoom turns the picture to mud when using the stock lens. Chromatic aberration is also present when using stock lens. Attached is a screen grab of a test we performed. The stock lens on the right an upgraded 20x Fujinon on the left. This is as sharp as we could get these cameras while at full zoom. Notice the aberration present in the image on the right (stock lens). Cameras are great in controlled environments where the subject is rather close. We purchased five 370’s to use with our new HD production truck and have been fighting focus issues at IMAG and sporting events from the first day we rolled out.

We are seeing the problem in the last 1/3 of the glass. We can’t get any detail at the end of a zoom with the stock 17x, however, we do see a little improvement using the 20x. Sample images shows little detail in either lens when at max zoom. Note the chromatic aberration on the right when employing the stock lens. In studio and when close to the subject these cameras ROCK! We are having trouble outdoors, at IMAG events and sports venues when needing the last part of the glass.
