By the way, if it’s not too much trouble, whenever you can, can you video-record a longer take, say 5 minutes with some movement like panning and tilting, and then upload that file? I would like to test how well Vegas can convert PAL footage to NTSC, especially when it comes to movement. Plus I would like to see more about that place, it looks interesting. I don’t know about your connection, but for me it’s very easy to download one or two hundred MB in a few minutes.

OK, so I downloaded it. I tested it in both Vegas Pro 8.1 and 8.0c setting up a project to match your footage, PAL 1920×1080 and 5.1 audio, and in both cases it worked flawlessly. I even applied color correction in both cases and it didn’t crash.
Somebody might correct me on this, but I think all Vegas versions are about the same under the hood, except that the consumer versions have some features stripped out, so it’s surprising that it doesn’t work in Platinum but it does in Pro. But you might want to download the trial for Platinum 9 and see what happens.

When I click on the link, it takes me to a rapidshare page, but your file is not there. It shows me a place to upload a file, and then a table with the comparison between the free and paid versions of rapidshare. See if there’s a different way that you’re supposed to link to the file, maybe it gives you a code somewhere.

If you do a very short take of about ten seconds and you can post that somewhere online for me to download, I can throw it to Vegas Pro 8 and tell you if it works.
I had no idea that Panasonic had released an update to the SD9, and looking up your camera online I can tell it’s an excellent update. I would get one right now if I could, having had the SD5 I know their picture quality is great, and now they put a focus ring on this model, which addresses one of my pet peeves when it comes to electronics design nowadays, that most companies put almost every single function, downright to the focus, through the use of menus, which drives me insane. I have a Canon HF-100 and I have to operate the stupid little joystick just to make focus.
I wonder if this new camera has something changed in its format design that makes it incompatible with older Vegas. Perhaps you could try downloading the latest trial of Platinum Pro 9 and see if it works in the same computer.

If you have 8.0d you can only have the Platinum version, and while I have not used any other than Pro 8,it has to an incompatibility between the camera and Vegas, because I have thrown AVCHD footage from a Panasonic SD5 to Vegas with no problems. Or, maybe you have some kind of systemwide problem that you can spend hours trying to investigate, or you can opt for making a good backup and then re-installing the OS again from scratch.

I’m hoping to start my own business as an event videographer soon, and this is one of the things that I’m looking into. Recently as I was videotaping some scenes on a lake just for fun I got a drop out and on HDV that means you lose about 8 frames. That led me to think, what if you’re taping a wedding and a drop occurs when they’re kissing? Or even if you use AVCHD (as I plan for a second camera) what if the SDHC card suddenly decides it had too much and screws up? So this kind of situation is what the E&O insurance would be for, right, in case the customer gets really pissed off because you lost the best shot and decides to sue you? I don’t want to be pessimistic, but anything can happen.
I looked up the WEVA, but their fee is $185 to join, which is a brutal amount of money for me as I’m just starting out. Does anybody know of any insurance company that will provide this E&O insurance? I imagine it must be as cheap as renter’s insurance, but I never heard of it before.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I have enough confidence in me and my skills to maybe not know a 100% that that will not happen, but that it probably won’t. I do have a full time job that will allow me to survive without having to sell my equipment, although in this economy nothing is for sure, but if I’m going to be that negative then I might as well not even start a business on the side.
It’s not like a bought a ten thousand dollar camera anyway, one camera I already had and the one I just got was less than $1500, plus some extra money in accessories that will allow me to do a better job. Like I said, I may not be a pro with years of experience, but on the other hand, I’m far from being a guy that just bought a camcorder and wants to shoot a wedding holding it in his hand.

Good advice, but a year is too long for me to wait. I need to launch my business as soon as possible for more reasons than I can list here, but among other things I just bought a bunch of equipment and I need to get back that money soon.

It’s in the Sony AVC module in the system tab, you can output either an AVC elementary stream, a MP4 file or an AVCHD file. In none of them you can go higher than 1440×1080 at 15 Mbps, and in 8.0c you can also get 1920×1080 at 16 Mbps, which doesn’t look bad, but it’s still pathetic that DVDA 5 allows you to encode AVC at any size and rate you want within specs, and Vegas does not.

Having shot one wedding so far (for free for a friend of mine as my wedding gift to her) I totally agree. I did however had a great time doing it and editing it.

I was thinking the same thing myself, however not so much for free but instead at a very reduced price. As I understand a regular wedding is normally charged about $1000, right? So I guess I would charge like $400, especially since I may not be a pro yet, but I’m far from being just a guy in the audience that grabs a camcorder and shoots and then the footage shakes all over the place. My friend was very happy with the video I made for her.
I also plan on delivering on Blu-Ray for those who request it, besides the DVD of course. Can anybody tell me how much more are event videographers charging for Blu-Ray as part of the package?
