The new architecture uses a three channel memory bust instead of dual-channel. So memory should be configured in increments of 3 (3GB, 6GB, 9GB, etc.)

Monoprice.com is selling the adapters for $15. They make DVI and HDMI. I read they’ll have a dual-link DVI and a mini to regular DisplayPort available in the near future.

I know you directed this at Eric but I can answer. You do NOT need a switch. You can connect directly.
If you have more clients than you have ports on the server, then it will make more sense to use link aggregation, in which case you will need a switch.

FCP won’t work. It doesn’t add 3:2 pulldown. Compressor should work though I haven’t tried it.
Curious, are you sure you can’t deliver 1080psf 23.98? Strange that a tapeless delivery needs to be 1080i.

Thanks for sharing. I do have a couple questions.
1. Have you done an AJA speed test running from a client machine? You can enable network drives in the AJA System Test preferences.
2. Have you tried capturing to the server using a client machine (not the server itself)?

SMB file sharing is too slow on the Mac end. Don’t even bother trying it. I think there’s an app for AFP on Windows, but it’s expensive (like more than a Mac Pro would cost). MetaLAN runs on Windows. You could look into that.
You can also Google “FreeNAS”. That’s the only practical option for AFP sharing on a PC server. It’s not as fast as using a real Mac server though.
The reason I’ve experimented with all this stuff is not because I had a cheap PC lying around. I happen to already have several high-end server PCs, quad and dual-port gigabit cards, several RAID cards, tons of drives, and a managed switch. I’ve tried to make good use of this stuff for the sake of not being wasteful. Tons of options for “shared editing” but to have reliable capture and layback at the same time – it hasn’t happened yet. If I needed reliable high-performance shared storage today, I’d purchase a fibre channel SAN and update my MetaSAN licenses. My point being, if you don’t already have all that stuff, don’t bother getting a PC working as a server for Macs. Not worth it.
