April 15, 2018 at 8:42 pm in reply to: amazing new capabilities IN R15

[Craig Seeman] “If only it had a trackless magnetic timeline…

Agreed. Been playing with the beta for a couple hours. First, the interface is crowded and clunky as hell (testing on a laptop). I guess I am used to the clean elegance of X. Maybe there’s a way to configure the interface to be a little cleaner?

The performance (2017 MbP, tricked out) is MUCH better. Very smooth. But this is a beta software for sure, as it crashed completely on a few occasions. I mean, no beach balls, just, ‘poof’ out to finder crashes.

Then there is that “track thing”. So limiting. ????

One nice thing is I pointed R15 to an X library and it imported all the separate clips from that library. Might be helpful to someone.

R15 at first glance has a TON of tools and features (color, FX, sound). More than I would ever use or are proficient in. If I need that much CC power and effect power, I am probably subbing those jobs out to experts. IMHO, X is a far better editor and has enough post tools to get what I need (and can do for my clients to their expectations) done. R15 has improved, but it’s still an “if I need it” software for me. Just my humble opinion.

However, over on the DS google forum, they are loving the potential of R15 as (finally) a replacement for DS. And for what DS was and what it could do, and as an ex-DS driver I have to agree.

[Walter Soyka] “Are there any markets they’re not trying to take with Resolve?”

Have not seen on request for Resolve as an editor. Spot work editorial, web marketing arena? None.

    Color corrector? Yes. Editor? No.

[Walter Soyka] ” I think the Good Enough Revolution favors the all-in-one approach.”

OK, are you saying that Resolve and all it’s tools are part of the “Good Enough Revolution”? I don’t think they see themselves that way.

Resolve is trying to be what Symphony SHOULD have been for Avid? Or maybe a Symphony/DS combo seeing the Fusion integration in Resolve? The Swiss Army knife (DS) approach did not work for Avid. Will it work for Resolve?

But Andrew (IMHO) is right; for the last few years everyone says BM/Resolve is “killing it”, but that fades away once NAB is over.

I wonder what market BM is trying to take with Resolve.

April 10, 2018 at 3:51 pm in reply to: As excited as I am about the 10.4.1 release……

[Steve Connor] “It’s very, VERY usable so if it’s stable then I shall be using it for a lot more finishing work on my FCPX projects.”

that’s good to hear. I threw the towel in at v12 when it could not even play internally generated bars and tone back at full rate. I will take a peek at the newer versions.

[Robin S. Kurz] ” I was JUST grazing through there making purchases yesterday… would have been a huge help!”

Agreed. I use Pond 5 a lot and this will certainly help. Would be nice to have other libraries hop on board as well.

  • Yep. Another software that is trying to do everything. And it’s still Resolve editorial which I gave up on (performance) a few versions back. Great color corrector. Wish they stayed put. MHO only.

  • [Andy Field] ” Because the newest laptops do t have the ports we need without spending a few hundred more for add ons.”

A few hundred? You need to shop around a bit more.

[Andy Field] “an unnecessary touch bar and a terrible to the stiff loud stiff keyboard.”

I’m actually digging the touch bar and find myself using it automatically (I was a skeptic at the start). You are right about the keyboard, plus the touch pad is too large and you find your cursor in strange places as your hand drifts over it. Not an issue when I edit as I use a full size add-on keyboard.

[David Cherniack] “it’s certainly not about a Fiesta vs a BMW going to visit your grandmother. It’s about going cross country – off road – and whether your car can get you there at all. Appropriate tools for appropriate work.

I agree. For me, I like the way my BMW (Mac) works. It feels fun to drive. It’s reliable. It’s understandable. That’s worth the cost of the extra (if any) investment. Plus it’s fully depreciable as an expense. 😉
