I guess I don’t understand the logic of the naysayers and the rumor mill.
The argument is basically this:
Apple should dump FCS/professional products because it is such a small percentage of their business.
And/or:
It doesn’t make a gazillion dollars like iPhone, so they must be thinking of dropping support for it. Or it’s the reason they won’t update it. Or both.Does that make any sense?
First if that was the Apple business model, then why even make computers? Apple has such a small share of the personal computer market, why bother to compete with MS?
I’m pretty sure they knew what the market penetration of FCS, and the related hardware sales were going to be. I bet that small sliver of their overall business is not a surprise.
Even that small sliver isn’t all that bad. Look at rough numbers. One million FCP licenses times 999 dollars (or more if you bought earlier), and each one of those is running on an Apple system. Lets say the average price of those systems is just 1,500 dollars, times a million. Even after you subtract all the costs, the kitchen sink, The Steve’s new liver, and add another 25% of cost on top of that, you still have made a buck or two.

Do you think the reason they spent money developing the 12 core was to satisfy iLife and Aperture users? Without FCS driving the sales of high-end systems, the resultant drop in sales could eliminate, or at least halt the development of these machines. So be careful what you wish for, especially if you like using high-end Mac hardware.Apple isn’t listening.
Why? Because they haven’t dropped everything and addressed your particular needs? How often does that happen? I have been doing TV since ’81, and have yet to find a perfect piece of gear. I’m not saying you don’t have a legitimate issue, or need. But you have to look at the numbers.
There are a million users, and how many on this forum? A thousand? Lets say 10,000. And of those, how many have a big complaint(s), or have migrated? Even if it was all 10,000, that still leaves (apparently) 990,000 silent users chugging along doing OK. I’m guessing Apple’s percentage of satisfied users are about average, and the speed of development is based on that to some degree.If Apple doesn’t announce a new version by (insert favorite trade show/event here) that means they are dumping FCS.
No, it doesn’t.
OK, I admit it could be that. But it dismisses the hundred other, and probably more likely reasons your new version isn’t out yet. If you go back on these forums far enough you will see plenty of criticism of Apple for releasing new versions before they were ready. Tough crowd, aren’t we?
Maybe they are trolling us by holding back a new release, trying to get some lulz. (if so, it’s working!)OK smart-a$$, what do you think they will do?

I shook the Magic 8 Ball and asked if FCS4 (code name FCS Awesome!) will be out soon, and it said “Reply hazy, try again”.So if FCS isn’t doing what you need, migrate to another platform that does. If enough people do that, then they will either feel the pressure to release an update, sell to a competitor, or buy the competitor everyone is migrating to.

Those are good resources. Thanks for posting the links.Not to sound snarky, but punctuation, grammar, and spelling are more important than font choice. A good dictionary, the AP Style Guide, or the Hodges’ Hardbrace handbook should be in the tool box.

Fluorescent lighting might be the way to go for what your doing.
If you are speaking of those silly rules about consumer light bulbs, I don’t think any of them apply to the type of bulbs used in production lighting fixtures. Specialty use bulbs are not effected, and in most cases quartz halogen bulbs are not included. Just the traditional, well loved tungsten/vacuum incandescent. And even in those tungsten styles it will still be possible to get the really big commercial bulbs used in old style scoops, china balls, and tower beacons.Scott Sheriff

The 110U is a nice little camera. I have had one for quite a while. Makes a nice picture under a reasonable amount of light. You really need to look at what format you are going to deliver the finished product in, and what platform you are going to use to edit your footage.
Why did I pick the 110U?
If your talking 720P/30 vs 1080i/30 HDV. I would rather have 720P, and don’t need or want to shoot interlaced, and think the smaller progressive frame looks better.
If your going to shoot HDV, which is kind of a fragile format, I prefer the JVC flavor that has the shorter 6 GOP frame structure, over the 15 frame GOP of the 1080i cameras. Less fragile.
I wanted to originate my footage on tape. Card based cameras present a challenge for archiving. Most people concerned about archiving resort to a tape back up system, which cost some coin. If you originate on tape, you don’t have that problem, since it acts as its own back-up.
Even expensive tape, is cheaper than inexpensive cards for most cameras. Sure you can reuse the cards, but now your back to the archive problem.
I prefer a CCD sensor, over the CMOS sensor.
I have been using cameras since they had tubes, and prefer the traditional layout and ergonomics of the JVC.
There are people that mope about the “poor low light shooting” of the 110U. First I’ll say that it isn’t horrible, just average. If you know what you are doing, you can squeeze a couple of more stops of exposure latitude out of the camera by properly adjusting the scene files. As they come from the factory, they are set very conservative, mostly to match the response curve of a NTSC CRT monitor. Super easy to fix that, and take full advantage of the CCD. Night shots on city streets, things like that come out fine. If you don’t own, or like to use lights, and find yourself shooting under candlelight a lot you may want to pony-up 5-10 grand more for a camera with a bigger pick-up and faster glass.
In the end this camera does what I need done, for the budget I have. Spending more wouldn’t have gotten me anything I needed, and that money is better spent somewhere else.Scott Sheriff

Todd is on the money about not using a gen indoors. Not only CO fumes, but the posablity of a fuel spill, make this extremely risky. If you were to do this, and there was an incident, it’s likely your insurance would refuse to pay claims because of gross negligence.
And yes, the impulse vibration from the engine would be hard, if not impossible to eliminate if it were riding on the same dolly. You could use a second doorway dolly as a trailer for the gen, but that would be much more cumbersome than draging an AC cord.
I would rather use a nice large gauge AC cord. Much easier to deal with.Scott Sheriff

A lot of newer fonts don’t really have a history behind them. Just something the designer thought would look nice, and not violate some copyright.
I don’t know if you can quantize very many fonts for a specific use, unless its something really specific like computer, brush script or magic marker.
So unless it is going to indicate a theme, I have always just used the visual balance and aesthetics through trial and error. And stay away from serif fonts unless they are going to be really big.Sorry, not much of an answer.
