    [Tom Wolsky] “Work with how?”

I’m assuming the OP means does Compressor 4 work directly with FCP6 such as the “Export using Compressor” in FCS2.
    My guess is no.
Actually if you already have FCS2 just keep using what you have. Other than a slightly updated UI, and some presets for YT, FB, etc, it’s really just the same old Compressor. Doesn’t look like it’s 64 bit either. Compressor 4 is really only useful for those that haven’t already bought one of the suites previously and don’t have a compression utility.

August 15, 2011 at 6:26 am in reply to: Starting a production company and need some advice

[Walter Soyka] “For those who have suggested that Jensen avoid starting a production company with his friends at the moment, what would you suggest he do in the short term instead? What sort of production industry jobs should he be looking for? How can he meet and network with the industry professionals who can get him work? What skills should he be focusing on? How can he set himself on a path that will take him from where he is to where he wants to be?”

Being the eternal pessimist I would not only advise against starting a production business, but working in the business as well. To me getting into production today, would be like going into the steam railway business in 1950.
While there seems to be an increase in demand, it is far outstripped by the exponential increase in the number of ‘production’ employees coming to the market. Besides the huge number of clients going the DIY route, much of this influx is comprised of idealistic newbies that have no overhead and are working for bottom rates, and huge numbers of displaced broadcast/cablecast workers that were ‘downsized’ out of a job. This is actually a double whammy because it is those missing broadcast/cablecast jobs that provided opportunity for many to get their foot in the door. LMA’s and duopoly’s, closing of news/sports departments, production departments, automation and budget cuts are taking these jobs away by the truckload in every market, and dumping those that were in those jobs into the freelance market since they have no where else to go. Add to them, the number of folks displaced by the closing of ad agencies, post and finishing houses and related businesses and your looking at a market that is so over-saturated it will probably never recover.
All you have to do is open your eyes and it’s right there to see if your looking.

And when you submit the job in Compressor you have to select the virtual cluster, instead of ‘this computer’ from the drop down list. This should be available once you ‘start sharing’.

    Man thats a real buzzkill.
Forgot the fact you’re on a MB. Not quite as easy to clone the drive as it would be on a tower. But still worth the effort to clone a working system before making changes.

    I think you’re hosed.
You should never do a reinstall, or OS upgrade on a system with pro-apps. You have to do a complete ‘clean install’ (search for how), and certainly never, never ever, without cloning your system first! Had you done that you could just pop in the clone drive and be back in business. Live and learn.
You may get lucky and be able to trash your prefs, and do permissions repair, and have that fix the problem. If not, you’re probably looking at a complete reinstall from scratch.
Some folks on here have tried some utilities that claim to repair broken FCP systems, you might do a search and see what that is about, but I don’t have any personal experience with these.

August 14, 2011 at 7:09 pm in reply to: BEST HD MINIDV Camera Under $ 3,200 ?

[Richard Angelous] “From TV advertisements, corporate videos, private events, sports, among others, and it must be delivered as soon as I finish on Mini DV, no time for transfers, and my budget is 3,200 dls”

Well thats a pretty tall order for a 3k camera, and not having the time to transcode the footage to whatever the client needs. I don’t think such a camera exists. Your best bet is to either rent, or hire a shooter with the gear that is compatible with your clients needs.
For broadcast you probably want something that shoots interlaced, but for other purposes, not so much. And some broadcasters want 720, while others want 1080. Some will take either, and some won’t. And when you say “HD mini DV camera”, I’m assuming you mean HDV. And it that is the case there are two different flavors of HDV, that are not compatible. So whichever one you pick, the clients that use the other format can’t play your tape. And then there is the issue of what frame rate to shoot?
It isn’t like the old days when you could run around with a Betacam, and have 99% assurance that you could just pop out the tape and give it to the client and they would be able to work with it. There are just to many standards and formats now that don’t directly interchange. The typical way around this is to capture the footage and transcode it.
This is the mythical quest for the one size fits all gadget, that is also budget priced, and super easy to use. If such a device exists, it is usually comprised in some way, much like the Swiss Army knife. It has a hundred different functions, but doesn’t do any of them even half as well as the stand alone single purpose tool.
I suppose if it were that cheap and easy (aka “the easy button”) to get into ‘the biz’ we would have an additional million wannabe’s more that what we have now.

August 13, 2011 at 11:17 pm in reply to: Best NLE deal going

But do you have access to a codec like ProRes

[Marcus Warren] “But at $595, Media 100 Suite v2 blows away any current upgrade or cross-grade deal. And it’s open to everyone, regardless of your current NLE, or even if you do not have an NLE.”

Just went and looked at the Media 100 site. It all looks very interesting until I got to the cost of support and upgrades. 600 dollars for a year of support, 700 dollars for a year of upgrades, and 900 dollars for a year of both. That is a deal breaker, especially the year of upgrades. This is nebulous at best. How many upgrades is that, and how often are they issued? And how beneficial are they?
IMO some level of support and updates/bug fixes should be included with the software at no charge. And the the purchase of upgrades should be a la carte so the purchaser has a chance to see if the update contains any real value.

Slightly OT, I see this was double posted in the FCP X forum. I wonder if the OP is a Media 100 employee, or VAR?
