Try changing the ports in the config and see if you get green. Then you will know if you have a port conflict.. normally rmi-registry related.

Apart from the display issues, can your clients connect ok?

It’s always good to perform a port scan from the client side to ensure that port is open. I have had issues with the port 1099 and other java apps and this did cause some odd behaviors. You connections may be getting through but CatDV Server thinks the ports are conflicted. I would suggest you try setting another port and see if the colored lights change on the settings panel.

Other than that it could be some kind of preference issue as John says.

Yes, the way I always deal with it is that you are only ever 720 x 576 for PAL SD broadcasts, anamorphic or not. The rest is just display information. Applications all seem to have a different approach to it.

Capture square pixel CCIR601 PAL in FCP and it will give you a ‘display’ pixel count of 768 x 576 when in fact its encoded pixel count is really 720 x 576.

Don’t even get me started on people calling NTSC 60i when in fact its 59.97…

It seems that the field ‘Aspect Ratio’ (ASP) is actually the display aspect ratio setting. Changing this will affect the display aspect ratio. I just wish this flag could be carried across from FCP or other ingest tools into CatDV. It’s one of those grey areas that has always bothered me with quicktime.

CatDV can be used in many ways throughout the production workflow. When it comes to archiving though, you really need to have a strong file naming and folder structure for your back end. This will keep you in control of the assets and will build a foundation to allow you to access this material 5-10-50 years down the line, which in my opinion is really what it’s all about.

It’s worth taking the extra time here.

Some of the workflows that I use involve having seperate stages of production, such as a working catalog and an archiving catalog. Depending on the workflow you employ, this may help you decide when and how to move those files in to differnt filenames and folder structures. CatDV has some very useful Move and Rename tools.

Many thanks for the storage DNA link, I will look into this. The XDCAM workflow you mention is similar to what I am eventually trying to achieve.

Hi Bryson, how are you testing real world performance between those two locations? Read / Write test between remote mounts? File transfer speed? Most places claim a pipe of a certain speed but I find they never perform as advertised.

This is a remote client in UK connecting to a server in Switzerland.

March 12, 2014 at 11:27 am in reply to: Scene Detect poster frame / thumbnail deletion?

Ok, so for anyone with this issue here is a solution from SquareBox. There will apparently be a fix for this bug in server 6.9. Please note that this will remove all thumbnails as stated but the server will still state the size as before in the sever admin panel ‘server status’ tab.

    From SB:

The following SQL command will delete all thumbnails other than a single poster thumbnail per clip. Double click the URL line (in the Database section of the CatDV control panel) then copy and paste the following line into the Query window that appears:

delete thumbnail.* from thumbnail left outer join clip on thumbnail.id = clip.posterId where clip.posterId is null

IMPORTANT: please take extreme care when directly running SQL commands as it is easy for a single command to corrupt or delete your entire database without warning and no ability to undo! Use the Backup command and ensure you have an up to date backup before running any SQL commands.

February 25, 2014 at 12:28 am in reply to: Web Client URL proxies

Ok thanks for the clarification John, strange thing is I do have proxies at the local level as well as the URL and they are mapped correctly.

As mentioned, I can get them to serve from the local disk. So these mappings are correct (wizard) and I know the URL is correct (client works with the mappings). Files are low quality mp4. URL works great in client really snappy on 200mb proxies with 60 min durations.

Just strange it works with the client but not the web client where it’s more practical to host files in such a way with dedicated media serving.

Are there any time out settings that can be adjusted for the web client?
