Shouldn’t Blackmagic be “the old Apple?” Cause I’m not sure I really like the “new Apple.”

This looks very interesting. The sample videos look pretty good too. Though ISO performance starts get noisy around 800, but for $3K you’re not going to get the C300 sensitivity. I’d be curious about this too. It’s one the things that frustrates me about PPro. I haven’t read anything either for or against it from the limited reviews that are circulated.

Transcode to Apple ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (LT). If you plan on doing color correction, matte generation, keying, etc. use 422. If you’re just doing straight cuts use (LT).
To transcode you can use Compressor, Quicktime, MPEG Streamclip, or 5DtoRGB.

Can the client open them at all? Or did they just give you a bunch of files not knowing what works and what doesn’t?
If they can open them in whatever program on their computer then you could export from their machine or do a screen capture….
It’s also possible that the files he gave you are corrupt. At that point you’re stuck as nothing can open them.

So let me get this straight – you’re wondering why your 3 year old laptop with a underpowered video card, only 2 cores, and 8GB of Ram is taking so long to export?! 😉 I’m somewhat surprised it’s only taking you 30 minutes to export.
Some things to consider:
(1) Premiere like many cores and powerful graphics cards (both of which you don’t really find on laptops…even the newest ones).
(2) Where are you pulling the data from (external hard drive? How is it attached – USB, Firewire, eSata?)? Each of the different connections have different speeds. In general working an attached hard disk via USB/Firewire will be slower than eSata.
(3) Where are you exporting the finished product to? Your internal drive (bad idea)? Back to the attached Firewire drive? To another disk somewhere? It takes time for PP to go get the data, crunch, and build the file somewhere. All of these things should be considered when discussing “how long will this render take?”
(4) What is your source footage? If you’re shooting HDV then it’ll always take a long time – it’s the nature of the codec. Or if you’re editing raw h.264 files – those take a long time to encode out to your finished product…it’s just the nature of those codecs (the way they compress data is very efficient, but extremely processor intensive).
(5) What codec are you exporting to? ProRes? Uncompressed? HDV? h.264?30 minutes may not be a bad considering all the variables your probably wrestling with.

What’s the source material? What data rate and setting are you using? Where is the source file located? where are you trying to put the encoded h.264 file (what hard drive – RAID, internal, Firewire, USB)? What’s the error message?
In short, give The Cow more information about your setup, problem, and workflow.

Sounds like a codec support issue. If there’s audio and no video when played in a given app (but the file plays fine in Quicktime) then the chosen app probably doesn’t have access to or support the codec of the Quicktime video.
What codec are you using?

I use Automator (standard app built into any Mac OS). Make a new workflow and select the “Rename Finder Items” function in there and you can batch rename. Use the search field in Automator to find it. You can add date/time, add text, change case, make sequential, replace text, etc. I don’t think many people know about Automator, but it’s a really powerful app built into the OS. Try it out.

I’ve run into this problem. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch it under after the original footage was discarded (hopefully not you scenario).
For my money now I only use MPEG Streamclip (or Compressor or 5DtoRGB). I don’t rely on L&T. I’ve found it to be intermittent and buggy. For me, it’s not worth the hassle or possible mistake. If you must use L&T then I agree with Michael, don’t do anything else while L&T is working. And once it’s done immediately double check the transcoded footage to make sure it’s all there.
