That’s the output from AME?
What are your settings? What is the source material? Are you bringing footage in our queuing it from Premiere or After Effects? What are you system settings? What GPU are you running? What is your renderer in AME set to? Have you tried clearing out your Media Cache Database within AME? Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the apps? Have you uninstalled and run the CC Cleaner Tool and then reinstalled ( https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html )?
Sorry for all the questions but we need more to go on that just a picture of a black screen.

[jason levy] “I notice that AME also created an .xmp file. I gather that is metadata and I’ll look into that more tomorrow. “
You’re exactly right. The XMP file is Adobe’s open-source solution file format for embedding information into a given file, or what’s commonly known as metadata. Depending on your workflow and needs it may or may not help you….

Yep…this has been a known problem for a while now with Adobe and the new Mac Pro. People’s recommended solution is typically to export using the “Software Only” setting which disables the GPU acceleration. It takes longer, but it’s more reliable with your final output.
Just for safe measure I would submit a Bug Fix request directly to Adobe:

[jason levy] “I have explored Media Encoder.. I see MXF OP1 but no signs of MPEG2 in that setting. There is a MPEG 2 setting but no OP1 in that… “
Jason, just follow what Thomas said above. He nailed it.
Once you chose the MXF OP1a format then you’ll need to change the codec portion of that format. The drop down menu next to “Video Codec”will allow to chose from the various installed options. XDCAMHD 50 NSTC (4:2:2) is a MPEG-2 based codec for broadcast, and the one you’re looking for.

August 11, 2014 at 2:20 pm in reply to: i need the old 2.0.3 canon 7d firmware – trying to install magic lantern. can anyone send me the file or download link?[sam Smith] “I have obviously tried this ryan or I wouldn’t be asking on this forum.”
The links to the firmware you’re requesting show up in that Google search Sam. It just takes a little clicking.

One other piece of advice, if you’re running hacked firmware (i.e. Magic Lantern) you should never update the firmware on your camera. Since ML is modifying the actual firmware, if even temporarily, it may not work (and may in fact brick the entire camera) when booting on top of a firmware that it’s not conditioned to work with yet. Additionally, if you’re going to run software hacks you should start keeping a log of previous firmwares (both Canon and ML) so that should you update and have problems you can roll back to a previous working version. The ML hack is not authorized or supported by Canon. So proceeding slowly on any updates from either is recommended.

[Mike MacKenzie] ” I initially tried .m4v’s out of Quicktime 7, just because they had an iPhone preset, but those look like crap on an actual iphone. Tried rendering out .mp4s at 864×486, rate os 3.5 min/max. looks ok but 2 minute vid ends up being 56mb, which seems a bit heavy for phones.”
You’ve just summed up the challenge of compression! 🙂 You have to determine what are acceptable losses: (1) Visual quality (lower data rate) or (2) Big file sizes (higher data rate).
I’m not sure what version of Adobe Media Encoder you’re running. Adobe CC has some pretty good encoder presets for mobile. For our exports everything goes out as h.264 mp4’s. I think that hits the widest amount of devices (iPhone/iPad/Android/Window Phone). Depending on your target market and CDN you may be able to get away with a 56MB (I’m assuming you meant MB and not mb as you wrote…there is a substantial difference between the 2. With Wi-Fi, 4G, and LTE speeds a 56MB file can be handled by most modern smartphones.
Here’s some good reading on Compression that might help you find that sweet spot for file size vs data rate:

Sounds like you may have a corrupt clip on your hands. If Quicktime 7 can open it can it export it?
You may also try VLC…sometimes that software can help out where others have failed.
One more idea, download the Creative Cloud trial and see if CC2014 can read/convert it. After these options though it may just be a bad clip!

So Quicktime file plays fine within Quicktime, once imported to PPro or Media Encoder it displays as green video?
Have you tried using other programs to convert to ProRes – Quicktime 7, MPEG StreamClip, etc. Do those applications work?
What version of Adobe are you running? System specs? Does this happen with other videos or other files from the same shoot? What camera did you shoot these on? Did you maintain the card structure at all (not typically needed for Adobe to read the file correctly)?
Just trying to get more info so we can see if we can get to the bottom of this….

[Jared Morgan] “Don’t you wish you could Mr. Potato Head every program you’ve ever worked on and combine all the best features?”
Sometimes I honestly do, Jared. Unfortunately, I just live in the world…I don’t make the rules for it!
