Hi James,
The screenshot shows you work in Trim mode. If you are having difficulty moving one of the edges of the trim overlay, hold down the CMD key while dragging the edges.
If you want a more precise control of the trimming action do your trimming in the Inspector by dragging on the Left, Right, Top or Bottom px numbers while holding the Option key.
P.S. if the object you trim is really small it also helps to zoom in on the Viewer to get better control.

Rendering to QT files was unique to FCP and it had its advantages and disadvantages. With computers getting faster all the time rendering and exporting times will further decrease. The problem with exporting and re-importing is that when you do this you cannot make any changes to your edits anymore, unless you create new Projects all the time. That was the same in FCP7.

FCPX is indeed re-creating the file from all its individual components when exporting, even if the clip has been rendered on the timeline. That’s because the render files are not actual QT movies but just pre-calculated references to all instances of the clip. The more filters you have on a clip the longer it will take to render and export.
Once the clip has been rendered it will take less time to export it. OTOH you will find that exporting an unrendered clip is faster than to first render the clip first and then export it.

Compression artifact would also be my first thought. Do you see the banding in the ProRes 422 or the Uncompressed video?

Ouch, I feel your pain.
I don’t think you have broken anything yet, you have been able to open the Events with all their keywords before. If this happens with all the Events on that drive (meaning it’s not a matter of just one Event being corrupted or so) there is definitely something wrong with that drive or with its connection to your system. So first I would check the USB cable and the drive.
If the problem persists I would advise to move all your Events to another drive as soon as you can. Try and get the Events opened correctly once more, then select every Event and use File > Move Event to transfer your Events to a decent external drive. I never use USB (not even USB3) except for backups or data transfers, because I still don’t trust USB for editing (call me old-fashioned). If you can get a fast Thunderbolt drive, that’s what I would use.

Okay, that’s normal. Each Event has its own set of keyword collections. When you disclose the triangle next to the Event name you can see the keyword collections for each Event. And apparently you can see them, so this means they are not lost. Correct?
And then you say: but I cannot see the group of keywords in the event library.
What group do you mean?

Hi Mark,
I guess so far I have been lucky being able to modify any FX Factory plugs I needed to modify. But of course I can not certify this works for all of them as I haven’t tried them all, so I will take your word for this.
But even if you cannot modify certain templates in Motion you still can add them as Favorites to your FCPX browser.

Open in Motion is indeed disabled in the FCPX Effects browser for some effects, but you can always open these effects inside the Motion Templates folder to change them and save new custom versions. The only effects you can not change (unless you can write code) are the core AV effects created by Apple (dissolves, wipes…) because these are not published Motion projects.
If you only need to create fav folders for your most-used effects, this is very simple in FCPX. But it’s not intuitive because you cannot do it inside the application and you cannot create fav folders for audio effects (yet). I think this will change very soon.
