[David Roth Weiss] “the point I was trying to make is that the technology at it’s very highest level is so good that there will be no stopping it, and it will be implemented almost everywhere before you know it.”
As you know from the phone conversations that we have had on the subject, I am in 100% agreement with you here.
Me, I have to laugh at the people in this industry cheering against stereoscopic 3D. Why? It is one of the few things in the market now, which is actually HELPING maintain a disparity between working pros and those that aspire to be.
If HD had maintained this kind of distinction — one that I believe that stereoscopic 3D will hold for a few years to come — it would had given a differentiation to protect pros that lasted no time at all, in the case of HD.
[David Roth Weiss] “It’s no gimmick, it’s just a better way of viewing almost anything.”
Good way to describe it, David. Again, agreement in full here.

[Tim Wilson] “While DRW saw a state of the art presentation with an expensive monitor, there are already nearly 200 million 3D-capable sets out there, and have been purchased for perfectly reasonable prices.”
I have grinned as I helped a number of friends of ours swap a cable or two on their set-ups, and pop in a disc and show them 3D working on their existing set.
Most common reaction?
“I didn’t know it could do that. It didn’t say so on the box.”
We have a 42″ flatscreen made by Polaroid that cost us about $1,500 a couple of years back. It works fine.
Is it as cool as seeing Real-D at the theater? Not even close. But for the cost of an HDMI cable between the TV and the player, not bad at all.

We are going to email COW leaders in advance of the ticket release but unfortunately, some COW leaders have email accounts that are not valid and bounce. (Your account is an example of this, so you will need to update your email address if you are going to get it, Michael.)
Best,
Ron

[Ned Miller] “I now believe this is a double dip recession.”
People will wish that this is a recession, as it just keeps going on and on.
Unfortunately it isn’t one.
As I have said in this forum before and feel compelled to do again, what we are seeing is a complete and utter reshuffling of opportunities and reallocation of money and resources around the world. It is a pendulum effect of redistributing wealth and power, as powers and economies pull and affect the future. It is going to stay like this for the foreseeable future.
Onetime under-performing nations like the “BRIC Nations,” (Brasil, Russia, India, China) are no longer what they were. They have become formidable players in the world economy.
Sovereign Wealth Funds (huge pools of money that are the property of nations who invest it) are moved in and out of markets and create huge impacts, good and bad — depending on how the funds are played.
The internet is having the same kind of “dangerous proximity” effect on economies that air travel has had on biological /bacterial/viral outbreaks around the world.
This is far more than any recession that we have known in the past.
Our children and grandchildren, speaking as an American, will inherit a world and an economy far different than the one that my father and grandfather lived in.
The rules are changing in such core fundamental ways, that to call it a recession is to do one’s self a great disservice because it is so much more than a recession.

Ron Lindeboom

[johnsabbath d’urzo] “thanks guys i think i would take option 1 try harder and stay away from griders is the new rule for this year.”
People sometimes say that they can’t afford NOT to take the grinder’s money because it is better than nothing.
WRONG.
These kinds of situations are double jeopardy: you are kept on the treadmill performing the “Hi, I am a rat on the wire hamster wheel” dance for their amusement and benefit — while they are COSTING you money. If you are not at a price point that is making you more than sustenance wages, while paying for your equipment, utilities, bookkeeping, marketing and sales expenses, etc., etc. — you are really LOSING money.
For many years now, we do not accept all of the business that comes our way. We keep the middle, the upper middle and the higher end of the pricing category of our service categories.
We do NOT accept the lower middle or the bottom of our pricing category.
By doing this, we have culled that section of the market that comes to your business toting their very own hamster wheel (which they will give you FREE! so that you can stay busy and tell your spouse and kids that you are doing everything in your power to succeed). And we have far less stress while doing it, as the reality of the low-end is that it’s also the part of the market that complains the most and can never be satisfied.
We have had people get really rankled when we tell them that they do not fit our customer profile, and we are not interested in their business. A few readjust their thinking and their actions and step up to the plate and become decent clients — in playing hardball with them, you have saved them from themselves. But most just get pissed and walk away and tell their friends what an idiot you are. Who cares? Their gossip helps keep me from having to deal with some of their friends later.
I have said this before and I will say it again: if you are always focused on serving grinders, you will be serving them forever, as you will generate self-perpetuating behavior patterns that draw more and more of them to you. I hate to get metaphysical on you, but there is a spiritual law that manifests in the old adage that “birds of a feather, flock together.” It’s true.
Some people would argue with me when I say that I would rather have a handful of clients than four-times the number of grinders.
My son is a building contractor and as I have told him a few times over the years, “busy isn’t always profit.”
I know plenty of people that are very busy and yet they make no money.
Hamster wheels are a real drag. The view never changes, and it’s always the same couple of muscles getting all the exercise.
There’s a lesson in there for non-hamsters.

Ron Lindeboom

Oh, and just to finish off the discussion of this subject: we do communicate with the agencies and ad people, and it is TOUGHER THAN NAILS just to get the ads we do that do NOT jump out of their position and start running across the page. Some agencies are oblivious to the fact that this is a community and they don’t want to hear it when we tell them that they cannot treat the COW like Yahoo and a thousand other places where they have ads that when you roll over them, they take over your browser and go nuts.
Just getting the ads we do is a miracle. We are grateful that our ad partners listen to us, as there are many that don’t — and won’t. They insist that they want FatBoy, BigBoy, ThisBoy and ThatBoy ads that grow outside their ad dimensions when rolled over and sing, dance, levitate, spin, twirl, explode and seize your machine and your attention on behalf of their client.
Fortunately, we have some good companies that listen to us when we tell them that our audience would lynch them if they did that here.
We’ll leave that kind of thing to Yahoo, AllMusic.com, and some of the other sites where the word “Gotcha!” is an everyday occurrence.
Oh, and Eric — who started the thread by saying how low the standards are for advertising and especially when considering that this is a creative industry site — consider how easy it will be for you to get all the business in your pocket because your standards are higher than ours, the agencies, the advertisers, and everyone else involved.
Go get ’em boy…

Ron Lindeboom

[Fred Jodry] “I can tell that you have never worked with advertising agencies, have you? …”
Why, as a matter of fact, I have, Fred. Created TV commercials for about 5 years. Thanks for asking.
[Fred Jodry] “They`re people, they listen, somewhat.”
Once the approval process has been completed and everyone signs off on things and the ad is created and distributed, there is about as much chance of getting something changed, as that of finding honesty in politics.
[Fred Jodry] “Artists tape holding paper curtains over the edge of your monitor on top of the untied- down ads also works.”
Or you can do what many people do, and just click on them.
