It doesn’t matter if you agree with it or not, Sebastian. The fact is, you are NOT a professional if you do not take the steps to assure that this doesn’t happen — in this case, using a second camera to guarantee that it doesn’t happen — and if you don’t take the step, you are a hobbyist, nothing more.
Charge accordingly.

I would think that I would give him a big discount, but I couldn’t just refund my whole fee and still give him the edited video, because even if there was a blunder, there’s still a lot of value in what he’s getting, despite the one second missing from it.”
If you are not giving the client what they wanted, then you have not given them what they hired you for. How can you charge for that? The work that you did that was wasted — as well as their time in hiring you and hoping that you would be a pro — it’s all a waste. Therefore, as many have said here, it’s not something that you should charge for. You didn’t do your job and you are the one that chose to fly without a safety net.
Sorry, but that’s the black and white of it and all the machinations in the world are not going to change it.

Translation?
If you want to take people’s money, you need to be a “real” business; otherwise, do it as a hobby and don’t charge people. Once you accept their money, you are on the hook in a circumstance wherein excuses do NOT cut it. Telling them that it wasn’t under your control will not work. As Bob Zelin said, it was under your control — you just did not take the steps necessary to stay on top of it.
Everything else is merely the droppings left by the bulls in the streets of Pamplona.
Hate to be so direct but there really are no excuses that work in situations like these.

I began focusing on the replies and not on the original question and it slipped my as yet pre-caffeinated brain that this was a non-profit.

Your post was moved as you yourself put an “OT” at the front because it was “off topic” for the Vegas forum. These kinds of questions almost always go unanswered on other forums, but they get addressed here.
If you do not like the advice, you don’t have to follow it. If you don’t like the way it was presented, you are entitled to be offended by it. But the fact is, if you live in the United States, you cannot write off your hours.
These people are NOT trying to beat you up and humiliate you, Sebastian. What they ARE trying to do is make you a better business person and one that is aware of things that you are clearly not aware of.
Take it all with a grain of salt, man. If you listen, you will find out what many have found out — that this forum is the “money” forum and those that make it a regular stop in their COW wanderings make more money and have more options than many of those that don’t.

We cannot do it here, though there have been times when we have seen companies cheat our friends so much so that we would love to do it.
Unfortunately, there are legal issues which preclude us from being able to do it here.
The legal backlash of running such a thing — and the fact that you can be held legally culpable in naming people as deadbeats when they *may* be nothing more than the target of someone’s vendetta against them — makes it to where we wouldn’t touch this kind of thing, at all.
But it would be fun — for a while, anyway. 😉

We have just added a Fusion forum — again — and we’ll see if it makes the cut this time. In the past, Fusion has been added a couple of times and has died each time. Let’s see if it fares better this time.

Tim, along with Kathlyn and I, discussed your request and decided that we should open a forum for the Sony SRW series, after all.
So if you look in the Sony listings, you will find a brand new and shiny forum for the SRW-5500 and 5800 listed.
I have moved a few posts into it which I found in other forums. Hopefully, this will make it feel not so empty. ;o)
