By the way, when working with 5D footage, make sure you copy the .THM file as well as the movie. When you import a movie, if CatDV finds a .THM file it will read all the Exif metadata from that and apply it to the main movie clip.

Are you still on CatDV 7? We did change Bulk Edit a little while ago (after a query on this forum I think!) so it does exactly as you suggest now and increments the last number, not the first one.
I’m not sure offhand if there’s an easy way to apply a new continuous timecode to a list of clips. There might be some way, perhaps using sequences, but I must admit I can’t immediately work out how to do it. Perhaps we need to add an option to the Apply Timecode Offset to apply incrementing timecode (in much the same was as Bulk Edit works).

With the Worker, if you don’t specify a particular catalog you can get it to automatically create a new catalog with each day’s ingests.
Another common scenario is to have the Worker initially put all new clips in an ‘In Box’ catalog, but then manually drag clips out of that into a more specific catalog as part of the logging process (perhaps one per episode and one for general assets, or one per logger as a way of assigning work to them, or whatever else makes sense in your particular workflow).
Also, as Kevin and Bryson point out, catalogs are just *one* way to browse and navigate to clips. It’s exactly analogous to files in a directory: every file has live in one directory (every clip belows to a catalog), but you wouldn’t put 100,000 files in one directory (or 100,000 clips in one catalog). The beauty of CatDV is that once you’ve tagged your clips with metadata you can browse the data just as effectively using smart folders or automatic grouping terms as you can by catalog, so you can very quickly “slice and dice” the view of your assets as required.

Hi Jiggy,
Drop us an email offlist with details of what of you’re trying to do and we’ll see if we can sort something out!

That’s odd, as both DV and OfflineRT/PhotoJPEG are about as standard and widely supported codecs as it’s possible to get! We don’t seem to be able to reproduce that problem here, so perhaps you could mail your CatDV Error Log file (in Home > Library > Logs) and the catalog containing the clips to support@squarebox.co.uk so we can investigate further?

Almost right! CatDV should always have warned you before deleting files or doing other operations that can’t be undone. We did recently make a change in that area, though, and added a new preferences option to disable those commands that let you delete or move files because a few people were asking for that. That’s probably what you’re thinking of. Thank you for the kind words though, we do try to be responsive!

Last time we looked properly at Vegas (a few years ago, admittedly) the problem was that they didn’t really support any kind of practical batch file format for import or export, though there is limited support via EDLs I believe. Do let us know if that’s changed and there’s a Vegas batch file format that you think we should be supporting though.
By the way, you’re always very welcome (in fact we encourage it to prevent misunderstandings and disappointments all round) to request a full-featured evaluation license of any of our product. That way you can perform a proper test with your media files and editing software to make sure CatDV meets your needs before making a purchase decision.

Ok, I can see there’s a need for a more general tool to apply timecode offsets, not just to the whole clip (Apple Timecode Offset will apply the same offset to in, out, in2, out2, event markers, and to the media start/end) but to specific field(s). We’ll investigate including that in a future version.

CatDV should pick up the original shooting date if it’s present in the EX1 files I believe, though you probably need the CatDV MXF Option (which isn’t available in the unregistered trial). Drop us a line to support@squarebox.co.uk if you’d like a temporary full evaluation license but if it still doesn’t work, and if you can provide a short example clip for us to test with, then we’d be more than happy to investigate.

White screen sounds like a missing codec. What format are the original files in? Do they play ok in CatDV?
