    A typical place where the subwoofer crossover point on stereo systems is 125 Hz. Just use the graphic equalizer and roll off all frequencies below 125 Hz and your vocals should not end up being heard in the subwoofer.

    I have no idea why the fades are bailing out early. Maybe check that the audio files are the same length as the video.

    But I believe that a GOP of 6, while maybe unusual, is not out of the DVD spec. Most of the lower cost encoders default to a length of 15, but the higher end encoders will let you set other parameters.

    Any DVD authoring package will work if you prepare your assets properly. All it takes is a little knowledge about how to prepare them.

    My guess is that the video portion of your file is fine – you probably used a preset out of FCP, right? It’s the audio that’s causing your problem. If using a preset, it’s probably still an AIFF file, or WAV file. That’s going to be too big. You will want to encode your audio to AC3 (also known as dolby digital). Now DVD Studio Pro is a fine application for authoring. I think since you use Final Cut that DVD Studio Pro is probably your best option. But you could use just about anything once you have your file sizes correct. DVD allows a maximum of 4.7GB per single layer disc. Now be careful how you count your gigabytes. A disc will hold 4.7 billion bytes, which is about 4.38GB if you count “thousands” as the computer standard 1024 bytes. In any case, there are bit rate calculators on-line that can help you figure out what bit rates to use, but as I said, I’m guessing your audio is making the overall size too big.

    Tektronix is the major manufacturer of waveforms and vectorscopes. I believe they have some tech info on their website about how to use them. Other than that, I would just Google for tutorials. Btw, Adobe Premier Pro has a waveform built in so you don’t need to get extra software plug ins for that one. Don’t know about Vegas.

    Matt,

    Sync between audio and video is normally maintained by encoding using matching timecode on both the video and audio. If you were to be provided just files, the facility that produced them would have to tell you where “0” on your file is as it relates to timecode. Probably 1:00:00:00 since that’s the standard way of doing it, but you would need to make sure.

    Even compressing it once causes a loss of quality. How much of a loss each time, or how many times?? Only your ears can tell you what is acceptable. It is ALWAYS best to work from an uncompressed source.

    Yes, you could receive the 5 or 6 files as WAVs or AIFFs. Then you could put them into a program such as Adobe Audition, and assuming you pay the extra $ for the dolby encoding plug in, you could output a 5.1 stream from there.

    As far as hardware, you would need to have some sort of encoder/capture card that would accept 6 inputs of audio. I know the packages from Sonic Solutions do that, but they’re VERY expensive. So on a budget, you could get something like the M-Audio 1010 multichannel audio card, and capture the tracks into Audition, then encode from there. I’m sure there are other software solutions besides Audition. That just happens to be what I’m familiar with.

    I have not worked with either the Optibase card or BitVice, so I’ll leave that question to others. But if the quality is at all comparable, the “real time” (or twice real time for a 2-pass encode)factor of the Optibase sure looks attractive.

    As far as 5.1 audio…

    No, you don’t just put two channels of the Digibeta into an encoder for 5.1 surround. You’re right, once encoded, it really is like two channels that get decoded out to 5.1. But to start with, you need six (if you have a Low Frequency Effect channel, 5 if not) discreet files that get sent into an encoder and turned in to the encoded 5.1 track. Typically an audio studio has done the 5.1 mix and provides the 5 or 6 tracks. The normal delivery format is DA-88 tapes. There’s lots of great info on dolby’s web site at http://www.dolby.com.

  • Encore allows you to disable any or all menu funtions when playing a “timeline” as Encore calls each PGC. Other apps probably allow this as well. I’m not in front of Encore at the moment, but it’s the “User Operations” tab somewhere that would control what is locked out.

    I’m also “old skool”, but my understanding of “standards” (there seem to be some variations, but at least you have to have a standard to vary from), is as follows:

    For analog, tone at 0 db, program material averages around 0 db with the peaks going slightly above (Maybe +3db or so)

    For digital, tone at -20 db, dialog/narration hovers around -14db with peaks going up to -10 or -9 or so.

    If you’re keeping everything below the level of the tone, you would be safe, but your levels would end up being somewhat low when used by somebody else on their system (broadcast, duplication, etc.).

    Now this is for video. In the music buisiness, peaking at as close to 0dbU as possible seems to be the norm. That’s where you get the solid black box waveform you’re talking about, because they have compressed the crap (and many times the life) out of the music! But that’s a whole ‘nother subject…
