If you make sure:
Image + Wireframe is turned on in the canvas
Select the clip in the timelineyou will be able to scale the clip disproportionately by hand when you hold SHIFT and drag the corners of the image in the canvas.

Nope and that’s not what I was suggesting. It takes time and money to skillfully work with shallow DoF, in my opinion. Although, I suppose I shouldn’t assume the original poster isn’t willing to spend that time and money.
If you say the AF-100’s LCD is fine for focusing, though, I”ll have to take your word for it 🙂

I’d recommend the HPX170. I think the HPX250 will be a bit out of the price range with a 6000 price tag (i think). It won’t take long for you to go over budget with that camera. So I personally think the HPX170 would be perfect – not too expensive, leaves you with cash to buy 64GB P2 cards and batteries, records DVCProHD, SDI output if needed.
I wouldn’t recommend the AF-100. Sure, shallow DoF is nice, but not when you don’t have a monitor, or a camera assistant to pull focus, or aren’t working in a controlled situation. Personally, I’m sick of seeing videos filled with pointless rack focuses and a never ending search for focus. Sheesh.

Ok, that means you can’t nest sequences that have different frame rates…
Make sure the 4:3 timeline is the same frame rate as your 16:9 sequence.

Ahh, it didn’t letterbox automatically. Easy fix, though.
You dragged the 16:9 sequence from the Browser to the 4:3 timeline, right? It should look like one long clip in the timeline, correct?
Right click on that clip and choose “Open In Viewer.” Go to the Motion tab and change the Scale to 75%.

Right, so because 320X240 is 4:3, create a new 4:3 Sequence in FCP. Drag your 16:9 sequence from the browser and drop it into the 4:3 timeline. It should letterbox automatically. Then export your file as 320X240.

Or, assuming you’re working with 16:9 footage since it’s being squished since 320X240 is 4:3, next your sequence into a 4:3 sequence. Then export that as 320X240
