Andrew Kimery:
I agree. 2017 can’t come soon enough. 😉I hope this is all in jest. Hoping for a reboot of the Mac Pro in 2016. Andrew, was there a reason you said “2017” other than justifiable despair and cynicism about any reboot occurring in my lifetime?

“So this one sounds pretty much exactly like what recent history would have suggested.”I for one miss the days when the WWDC was a forward-looking view to look at platform change to come. The June 2013 WWDC announced the new Mac Pro that was released December 18, 2013. Maybe WWDC 2016 will have something significant to say about the next Mac Pro when USB-C and Skylake have made it to Xeon.

Bret, you’re right that 1TB internal flash storage may be beyond his budget and that’s fine as you describe. I was just saying it can be a great option. Don’t know his workflow and size requirements but if they are small projects that he does one or two at a time, then you can put everything internal on the flash and archive externally when completed. For larger tasks, putting the FCP X Project on the flash while the files are external may help. Anything temporary might work best on the flash if it fits. Of course this is true with the Fusion approach but you aren’t so cramped for available space if you have 1 TB flash versus 256 GB.

Dwain, SSD drives can be internal or external. When Apple sells you the option to have up to a terabyte of flash storage, that’s internal. But you would typically be editing from an external RAID that could use traditional spinning disks (HDD) or SSDs.

Bret, I don’t understand why you’ve said Fusion is your only option with the i7. You have the option of up to 1 TB flash storage, forget Fusion. Your overall machine will be much happier with the 1 TB flash storage. Using the term SSD instead of flash storage can be confusing. I find flash storage easier to conceptualizer as it’s just a few chips on the motherboard rather than a typical SSD that plugs into a SATA connector on a daughterboard.

If the only updates you do are the memory and the fastest i7 processor, it will help FCP X.

Dwain, if you are not constrained by budget, I’d recommend you max out the iMac to extend its useful life by a few years for your video use. In other words, buy the largest GPU you can, and select the most internal flash storage you can (the whole machine will run faster with 1 TB of internal flash storage, faster than even 512 GB of flash). You can’t upgrade these items in the future so best to max them out when you order the new machine. Memory, as Oliver mentioned, will be used by FCP X so 16 GB is the minimum but 32 GB would be an improvement. Again, you will greatly benefit from the fastest i7 processor, not so much from the fastest i5 processor; always go for i7 for any serious use such as video.

If you plan on using a MacBook Pro 15″ for 4K, I’d suggest completely maxing out the configuration including the 2.8 GHz processor and the 1 TB internal flash storage. The actual performance of the laptop increases as you add more flash storage. I know it’s more money, but you’ll get another year of use from a maxed out machine at least and could be more by the time you buy again.

Thanks, Lance. I think we’ve established that having the terabyte of internal flash gives a good boost to performance and I agree with the rest of your configuration but we shall see how the 6-core performs. Hope is does your work adequately!

Lance, would be great to hear how you feel about the 6-core machine. Considering the faster CPU, it’s throughput in terms of CPU cycles is only about 12% less than the 8-core, and any single or dual-threaded process will run faster. I’m also wIting to see if Apple indicates they have an update to the CPUs and GPUs later this year as I’ll wan to process the 4.6K files from the BLACKMAGIC URSA Mini.
