… oh yeah part of my $295/hr came from the dream of only working 20 hours a week.
I believe that dream died very quickly.

Ask them to make you an offer. Really, it won’t be much based on what you have described primarily because of the length, but a sale to a major cable channel is a feather in your cap you can use to drum up new biz.
You aren’t going to be paying off any cars with this deal I suspect.

Aaron I am compelled to comment.
Your request for pricing info won’t fly if your video doesn’t play. I’m using WXPSP2 and no go on your videos. They don’t play and you’re on the COW asking for professional advice. I’d say get your video codec issue resolved.
Personally your website doesn’t appeal to me but it’s been said before.
What I am really offended by is your cavalier attitude regarding your employer who you admit “doesn’t pay you much” but right there on your site is a reference to RJ Lachance.
“In October of 2005, Aaron began a full-time position as a video editor with R.J. LaChance, an advertising agency in
East Providence, Rhode Island.”I’m going to assume this is the cheap boss you didn’t sign a non-compete contract with.
Dude, it’s a small world and if you want to play in it you gotta follow a few rules. Like if you’re a video producer put video on your site people can see. And under NO circumstances publically dis anyone in your industry. Be cool, and by all means dish at the pub privately, but you are so very burned or making things hard with your attitude towards your employer, and the professionals on the COW who are really just trying their best to respond to your call for help, or input.
And to answer your question about pricing, there are plenty of freelance guides on the web that do a handy job of figuring out your total cost of hire.

Wait a minute I’m confused.
Again, is the Kiro spot YOUR spot, or is that the spot the client said “make our spot look like this one”?
If the client is in fact Kiro and this is your work, you did a great job. Bill it!

For green screen I’d shoot BetaSP over HDV and upconvert the SD to HD, but that’s open to discussion!

It’s an infomercial. :30, :60, very common. 1:20 is now considered “long form” which is kinda funny. And of course the 28:30 still exists. Although in some markets I’m seeing 13:30 which is strange but up and coming.

Is the Kiro a competitor or what you shot on spec?
That’s worth a minimum of $25,000 by my estimation. To get the ball rolling. That’s production, gear rental, talent, rental for the space, post, audio…

First of all great reel. What is the music; you made it work really well.
I like your site, but I wonder if it could be a little less talky and more showy. You have a great reel but the site looks a bit green.
As for more work there is no magic bullet. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Spec ads might be good to help beef up your portfolio a bit more. The thing with ad agencies is they need to see you can do a little bit of everything, at least in my experience.

January 3, 2008 at 2:41 am in reply to: Software for tracking project quotes/hours/costsEvery few months on the COW I recommend Basecamp (37signals). I love it. If projects dry up I “archive” them which doesn’t count against my quota and drop to the cheapest tier. If I need to re-enact a project beyond the three I pay more then, but only then. Works for me. The software is kind of amazing. I even use their simple word processor to write scripts; producers in the field can access it, make changes which are tracked, and voice guys access the same script from wherever, and drop MP3 files using the integrated FTP which is really simple and easy to track.
A big problem is the timetracking; something about it doesn’t work for my line our work (post) It was easy to track hours by person but not by job… something like that.
I’ve heard of someone using the free Palm Desktop to book his edit suites. It might have been here on the COW too. Each room is a Palm “category”. This solution sounded just brilliant and free.
Finally, as Brendan suggested already, most guys use Filemaker. I’ve set up Filemaker databases for tapes and simple bookings but it gets confusing kinda fast. You need a dedicated office manager person to keep it running smoothly and without being boxed in. He’s right you can change EVERYTHING which is good or bad depending on your POV.

> When I submitted it years ago to DV, they turned it down.
Ron, that’s amazing and not unexpected at the same time.
The internet creates a very valuable distribution network for creative and clever writers like Mr. Reizner. I won’t sign the petition and in fact I wish him well. The cream of the crop always rises to the top, he obviously has a solid following that respects him and will follow him elsewhere I’m sure. In fact, as an example, take a look at what Morgan Webb did when her gig at G4 wasn’t moving in the right direction. Her Webbalert
…podcast seems to be doing great. Take a look at her sponsors and she’s been live only a few months.
I’ll follow this story if for no other reason to see where he ends up.
