    Hi Dave, thanks.

Say I make a cut, just straight cuts, and export as a self-contained quick time movie. Have I lost any image quality from the original captured clips? Do I need to online from the original captured clips to match my cut to keep the image quality the best it can be?

As for rendered stuff (some color corrections/blow-ups/fades) what would you recommend? Taking the original clips to an effects house and reproducing my effects there, then dropping into the full sequence?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks again

Mostly because I’m an idiot for not trying that sooner. Thanks, David. I’ll give it a try and hopefully the timecode won’t default (??). Any difference whether I export from the canvas or the viewer? I’ll probably know by the time you answer this … thanks again!

Hi everyone, sorry for not being clear enough in my original post.

To clarify: I assembled an entire feature (running time 1 hr 38 min), added a “Property of” disclaimer in video track 2. Then I added a timecode burn-in for the entire show by adding a timecode generator through video filters and dropping it onto vid track 2.

My music composer wants Quick Times of individual scenes to work with (I have to send them out of state to him, so file sizes need to remain manageable) with timecode burn-ins that match the original timecode burn-in for the whole show. But when I subclip the individual scenes out of the full show, the timecode burn-ins for those scenes all default to 00:00:00:00 at the start of each subclip (as opposed to keeping the same burn-ins that they have in their original position within the full show). Does this help to clarify?

    thanks, Russell

so should I set up the project as HD, then import the SD material into it?

Or the other option, what would I convert the HD material to? And how would I go about it?

thanks again, any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks so much for the input

just one more question: compressing my sequence (@23.98, 16:9 to DVD best quality 150 minutes, 2-pass VBR) estimated compression time was 19 hours. Yeah, I know I selected the 2-pass VBR option, but still seems excessive. Is this normal?

Whew! In the ol’ Avid, you just route the Avid to your DVD deck, hit play in Composer and record on the DVD deck, and 2 hrs later, you got yourself a DVD of your movie. Would be nice if FCP tried to make this whole process a little less of a time-consuming headache.

    thanks again, everyone

May 31, 2007 at 3:19 pm in reply to: best way to burn a DVD from an HDV 720p24 project

    OK, here’s the update.

I created a new DV/NTSC project (working in FCP 5.1.4), imported the QT file of my film that I exported from the original 720p24 project.

I created a new sequence in the DV/NTSC project with the following settings:
    Aspect Ratio HDTV 720p (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio – Square (should I have chosen NTSC?)
    Anamorphic – unchecked
    editing timebase 23.98
Compressor – MPEG 4 Video (should I have chosen another MPEG format or left the setting on HDV 720p24?)

Then, as suggested, I tried to export via compressor, choosing DVD 120 16:9 and best quality in my settings. Unfamiliar with compressor, but assume a “batch” is the sequence I’m exporting, and that “submit” is the export command.

PROBLEM: Came back several hours later to find that the estimated time remaining was 45 hours and growing, so I canceled.

Next decided to export using Quick Time with the following settings:
    DV NTSC 48 kHz – 23.98
    Audio & Video
    Made movie self-contained.

PROBLEM: the file played fine but the image was squeezed.

Assumed I should have checked the anamorphic box in my sequence settings? So I created a new sequence and did so, then dropped in my original imported QT file.

PROBLEM: the image in the canvas is a small letterboxed image in a large black window. Will this be the way that the exported file appears?

Any suggestions or advice on where I have gone wrong in my procedures would be greatly appreciated. Again, just trying to get a file on my desktop with the proper 16:9 aspect ratio from a 23.98 project that i can burn via DVD Studio Pro.

    thanks very much
    Rich
