I would send him a clip just to test that out to be sure. My current workflow involves us using AMA to transcode XDCAM discs. We add a tapename to the AMA clips (using the “Modify” command). When those AMA clips are relinked to the discs for online, it does throw away the tape name in favor of the clip source name, but we just add the name back and relink and it’s been fine.

Keep in mind, that currently, Red Epic is compatible with AMA in MC 6, but the audio associated with it is not. If you’re shooting double system audio, that’s fine, but if not you need to use Red Cine X. In my case, I’m cutting an independent feature that was shot Red Epic. We’re going to master HD, and they don’t currently have the budget to color correct at a high end facility, so we’re not going back to the R3D files, so I created MXF media at DNxHD 175x, and my offline will be my online. (Fortunately, they didn’t shoot a ton of footage because the filesizes are large at DNxHD 175x) The Red Epic did have quite a lot of issues with stability and overheating which caused a lot of shots to either be totally corrupt or partially corrupt. In those cases, I need to use Red Cine X to create DPX seqeuences, then I would use AJA’s DPX converter to import those into Avid, and I’d have to create BWF files to get the camera audio in a second pass. Hopefully you won’t run into those issues, but if you do, that’s what I used to remedy the situation.

  • Just for the sake of asking, are you positive they shot at 1080 24p and not at 720? I’ve worked my share of shows were cameramen were totally sure they shot at the correction frame rate and resolution, when in fact they didn’t. If it’s consistently 720p, that’s less of an issue but if you have one cam at 720 and another at 1080, well that just a mess but one thing at a time. I would try changing your project to 720 just to try it out.

I’ve seen that before. Insert your first tape. The beeping will stop and it will capture as normal. It’s annoying, but not end of the world.

Turns out, it wasn’t a result of files being left behind. I was testing it on a separate partition of my laptop, but both partitions are Lion which denies write privileges to the root level of the drive by default. Avid would give me a drive warning me that that are no drives available with write access, but would proceed to list my projects as normal. When I’d select a project, it give me a Segmentation Fault error. When I mounted a disk image, which allowed Avid place to write files, it started up fine. Granted, this is a strange situation because you wouldn’t normally start it up without a media drive, and in my case I just wanted to check out the interface a bit. Any way, problem solved.

Wow, that is quite a bit. I’ve always ran the uninstaller, is this something new with MC6, or has Avid always left these files behind?

I ran the uninstaller. Didn’t delete the remaining files. Are you talking about the files in the applications folder alone, or does that include files in the application support folder in the Library folder?
