Unistalling the software will not delete your projects. If you save your projects somewhere other than the default directories, you’ll have to repoint the Avid to see those, but it won’t delete projects. Also, if you are connecting your camera to your computer at the same time that your Adrenaline is plugged, then your computer being angry is completely to be expected. The Adrenline needs to be the only firewire device connected onto one bus. That’s why most facilities I’ve worked at have a pci-e firewire card so that they can also connect firewire hard drives and such.

Since you mentioned device manager, I’m going to assume that you’re using a PC. Have you tried plugging the Adrenaline into a different firewire port? It’s possible your port is being funny.
What operating system, and what computer are you using? Any information on your system will help. If you suspect a missing driver, it might not be a bad idea to uninstall media composer, restart your system and then reinstall it.

Transition Manipulation can be deactivated individually in the smart tool, or the smart tool can be entirely deactivated. I would check that. If they are activated and it’s not coming up, I’d try trashing your site settings, site attributes and MC states.

There is no way to use the project file, it has to be an AAF. You should be able to batch capture HD, since it will only be looking at offline master clips. How good is it? Considering what it does, it’s amazing. If you’re expecting your sequence to come in 1:1, it won’t even be close. There are a variety of effects that simply don’t translate, and if mixing of frame rates were done, those are incredibly problematic. I find in general, going from Avid to FCP was always less painful than from FCP to Avid. That said, my recommendation would be to start Avid and finish Avid. Switching NLEs mid project is a very labor intensive process, and from my perspective as an AE, it’s a very difficult thing to control the expectation from producers who expecting it to magically convert everything with no hitches.

You can’t group mixed frame rates. If you try to transcode 29.97 material in a 23.976 project, it will warn you that it will create 23.976 media from your 29.97 material but you will not be able to relink it via AMA or batch import it. So if you transcode it at hi res with no intention of ever relinking, you’ll be fine. A better solution would be to take your quicktime files (or I think the iPhone 4 shoots m4v) and run them through either MPEG Streamclip or Compressor. Convert the frame rate there, which will produce a 23.976 quicktime that you can import into the Avid, and can be matched back later if you need.
On Hotel Hell, we didn’t convert via compressor because our masters were shot on XDCAM, so in order to maintain matchability, we would have had to got our XDCAM disks converted via some hardware solution. Keep in mind, when you use MPEG stream clip, it will get rid of your timecode, and compressor isn’t alway totally accurate in maintaining timecode, especially when frame rates change. Fortunately, the iPhone isn’t really tracking timecode so that’s less of a worry.
Moral of the story, mixed frame rates bad. Mixed frame rates, very bad.

Not positive about the 60D. When you import the quicktime files, do they all start at 00:00:00:00? Of course, if that camera doesn’t generate THM files it won’t matter.

The tape source can be added in the Avid, but the most important thing QT Change will do is it will embed the timecode from the THM file into the quicktime file. You’ll notice if you import or AMA those Quicktime files right off the bat, all of their starting time codes will be 00:00:00:00 but if you use QT change, you will get time of day timecode which is very useful.

Currently working with 5.5.3. Also, if you’re using the 5D, the Mark III embeds TOD timecode into the quicktime files, but if you’re using the Mark II, I’d recommend QT Change to embed timecode into your files.

It does not alter the source file. Only the master clip that Avid creates from it. I’ve used this workflow to offline and later online with XDCAM. As long as you organize your footage so that you know what tape name you’ve assigned, you’ll be fine.
