    The quality of the concept depends on exactly what Me. Kohout is proposing to do. It is still not clear to me exactly what he is asking for. Does he really have cameras with component out? That is why I asked for clarification on exactly what we are talking about here. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Cat5 as a quality transmission medium.

    Which Tricaster model? What cameras? It could be that your cameras don’t put out anything that Cat5 couldn’t handle.

    Afraid the answer isn’t as simple as you would like it to be. There are many variables in play and there are different solutions (and often multiple, equally-viable solutions) depending on the exact situation.

    In addition to the “digital solution” as Ty mentioned, use of the old-fashioned “heavy-metal” traditional transformer is quite often a life-saver when dealing with disparate equipment, grounds, levels, RFI, ad nauseum.

    There are several products from various vendors like BeachTek and JuicedLink which are made for taking balanced line (mic level or line-level) signals and “munging” them to make them suitable for the 3.5mm stereo mini-phone mic inputs on consumer camcorders (and DSLRs, etc.) Some of these products use traditional “heavy-metal” transformers, and many more modern products use active circuits to achieve the effect of a differential balanced input. Alas many of the active circuit designs are much more susceptible to environmental noise (mains buzz, RFI, etc.)

    Some people also keep various ferrite/powered iron torroid cores around to put cables through (sometimes several turns) to minimize the RF before it hits the input. Or those clip-around ferrite “beads”. I would have put a couple of these photos here if I could figure out this bizare web software.

    More detail required. Is this RGB out of the Tricaster to somewhere (WHERE?). Is this RGB (VGA) from a computer (for example) INTO the Tricaster?

    Note that sending computer VGA video over Cat5 cable is quite regularly done. And most computer VGA is higher resolution than NTSC or PAL, etc. But we don’t really know exactly what you are asking here, so duck when you hear us shooting in the dark.

    Cat6 cable is very similar to Cat5 but has more stringent standards which allows use up to 500MHz (vs. 250MHz for Cat5).

    In addition to what Mr. Suszko said, is this just “B-roll” for something, or are you shooting instructional footage where we need to see the actual arc/flame, how to move the work piece, how the metal melts, how the joints are secured, etc, etc?

    If you are shooting instructional video, I would try to do it outdoors because you will need A LOT of light to compete with the arc and maintain proper exposure of all the interesting bits.

  • I have the LCD4 product. It is OK if that size works for you. It is made for smaller cameras (like yours and like my EX1 and NX5s and closer operation (not across a large studio, etc.)

    It is reasonably well made, but you may need to take it to a hardware store and spend another $3 on the proper hardware (bolts, washers, etc.) for your rig.

    The screen is nice, but somewhat “fiddly” to set up with its nearly-invisible touch controls and the little IR remote is not terribly reliable IME.

    I ended up using other software I liked better: PromptDog.

    To be more precise, the ban applies to the band between 698 and 806 MHz. And in reality very few people actually had licenses for their wireless mics in that “700MHz band” and it wasn’t really legal for anyone else, but even a ban on sales of equipment was never enforced, nor did they charge or prosecute anyone. There are many wireless mic products that ARE legal ABOVE the 806MHz top end of the band.

    It is not clear why you think you need anything at all for the subject to hear you since you are both in the same room?

    I’m not getting the full picture here. Are you RECORDING the other person’s audio (speech?)? Is it a production track or just a scratch track? Do you need to isolate the sound from you to the other guy from the recording of the other guy? Note that when you see remote interviews on TV, the people at each end are wearing earpieces to hear the other guy’s audio but so that it doesn’t interfere with their audio being picked up by their own mic.

    We don’t know what the ultimate goal of the audio is here, and we don’t know whether isolation is important?
