  • There is no generic answer. It depends on exactly how the pot shafts are designed. Some (very inexpensive) pots have a small “x” shape hole in the metal “slider” and the metal part is actually connected to the circuit. You would certainly want an insulated screwdriver or a plastic “alignment tool”. Some adjustments are actually variable inductors and have a screwdriver slot or a hex-shape hole, and they make those plastic alignment tools in a variety of shapes and sizes to match all of these various cases.

    Then some pots have plastic shafts with a slot in the end, and they can be adjusted with a conventional metal-shaft small “tweaker” screwdriver.

    These are pretty inexpensive kits and available in most places that sell tools for electronic repair.

    Have you looked at the waveform in a computer editing program? It is possible that you really are clipping (reaching 0dBFS) but the peaks are too fast for your metering indicators.

    Can you test the phenomenon with a different microphone? As Mr. Ford observed, it is possible that the clipping is happening elsewhere.

    You need a video switcher. You didn’t mention what cameras you are using or what computer hardware or software.

    You could use something as simple as a mechanical switch. That would produce a significant ugly glitch in the video every time you switch cameras. There are simple video switchers that take two cameras and internally synchronize the video to make smooth transitions. There is also software that can switch between video inputs, assuming you have two video inputs on your computer, and you have enough horsepower in your computer to handle the video switching AND the video streaming.

    Be sure your camera case isn’t too big for carry-on luggage.
    Have a charged battery in the camera to demonstrate that it works (i.e. it isn’t a bomb)
    Millions of electronic items go through the scanners every month without affecting flash memory.

    There is equipment that transports full-broadcast quality HD video over the internet. It requires a high-speed broadband connection at each end (of course). I know that there are TV stations that use this equipment from Streambox to feed point-to-point video around, and even for feeding the transmitter, etc.

  • No, it is not likely that it will work. It is not just the connector type or gender that is the issue. If it were, then your adapter wold do the trick.

    The problem is that lav mics that are configured for plugging in to wireless mic transmitters use a completely different scheme for powering the mic than the XLR kind use. Wireless mic transmitters use low voltage batteries and electret mic capsules generally need only a low power voltage. Wireless transmitters take advantage of this combination and provide only a few volts on that connector.

    But standard mic preamp inputs that use the full-size XLR connector use the “P48” phantom power standard. This puts up to 48V on the balanced signal pins. Standard microphones are designed to use this voltage. But if you apply that kind of voltage directly to an electret lav mic capsule, it will almost certainly be ruined in milliseconds. NOT recommended.

    There are proper adapters for this kind of combination. Not cheap.

    Limit the frequency response so that it won’t sound so “on mic”. Add a bit of reverb so that it sounds like it is coming from farther away and maybe bounding off a wall or two.

    But when we turn a knob to control something logarithmic (sound level, light, pitch, etc.) having it behave in a logarithmic manner is very difficult to control. That is why log pots are used: to “linearize” the control function.

    Mr. Brown claimed that Mr. Vahl’s statement was “Not true.” And then he proceeded to demonstrate exactly why Mr. Vahl IS correct. Log pots are used to take log phenomenon and “linearize” them so that they are easier to manage by humans.

    Can you try the source into some other preamp that you are familiar with? It has the symptoms of a very low-level source. I have seen some preamps that pump in a whole lotta’ gain in the last few degrees of rotation of the trim pot. Generally with those kinds of preamps you don’t really want to be operating in that region of the adjustment.
