There is a big difference between a car that looks like a Ferrari and a real Ferrari. Same with movies. Clients will pretty soon learn that there is a big difference between a video that looks like a high priced production and a real high priced production.

interesting Jim – the two click dance with the computer mouse also seems necessary with layered menus.
anyway I found that with sonic scenarist 3.1 was the app used by the guy I was talking with. It seems you can add music to layered menus in scenarist, with the limitations Noah outlined above.

First I 100% agree with your advice about avoiding layered menus.
Chatting yesterday with another video guy about this issue he said:
“you can add audio to layered menus, but everytime you go to a new menu choice the audio will stop and start again from the beginning”
Obviously the stop/start is happening for the reasons you outlined above – and this makes using background music useless or at least very distracting. I can’t really see much use for it, especially because of the delay of unloading the audio, unloading the menu, loading the new menu and then loading the new audio everytime you scroll to a new menu choice. Just switching menu choices in a layered menu is sluggish enough.
But just as a matter of interest do you know what DVD app would allow this functionality?

The handle on the XLH1 is too wide for the clamps that hold the battery – you could squeeze it onto an XL1s – but I would not want to do that on a regular basis.
Its a good unit if you need something on your camera all day long especially for fill while working in natural light. I just used one to shoot handheld for several hours at an all-day outdoor event and the unit was invaluable – no way could I have worn a battery belt.
Inside performance is not great – applying the 32k filter along with diffusion output goes from 40W to maybe 15.

yes – AGC will prevent most clipping. The audio will be noisy and thin with a lot of echo – but with any luck mostly intelligible.
Follow Don’s advice if you aspire to something more.

to help prevent clipping record to both channels and set the levels around 6db apart – so you have channel one at around -12db and channel 2 around -18db.

obvious choices – NRG varalux or frezzi dimmable. If you can live with the cost/weight of the batteries. If not – check out the new LED from varizoom if not. It sells for less than the price of an NRG vest and uses camera batteries.

Cleaning – absolutely if you pick the right shop. But resetting to factory specs and doing a thorough check – probably not. In my understanding there are some fairly routine tasks to do with calibrating the CCD unit that only Canon Factory Service can do.
