August 2, 2009 at 2:26 am in reply to: Final Cut Pro Documents folder safe to appear on system drive?Hi David
Thanks once again for your prompt advice – you’re a gentleman.
Okay I tried what you suggested but unfortunately the Final Cut Pro Documents reappeared at the same following location:
Macintosh HD > Users > me > Documents > Final Cut Pro Documents
There is nothing in the folder at all, just the hollow ‘Final Cut Pro Documents’
In case there’s perhaps a problem with its location, my FCP Projects folder is located at:
Macintosh HD > FCP Projects (it sits alongside ‘Applications’, ‘Library’, ‘System’ and ‘Users’
I’m thinking…perhaps I might need to move my FCP Projects folder to the location where the empty Final Cut Pro Documents folder keeps reappearing.
The Final Cut Pro Documents folder seems to reappear within my ‘Users > me >’ whereas my FCP Projects folder (where I have been using ‘Save As’ in FCP to save my project, is located ‘outside’ my ‘Users’ identity, if you know what I mean?!
I verified and also repaired my system drive.
I ran a verify on my 1TB MyBook which backs up my system drive.
I did not run a repair or verify on the D800 Raid 5, as I’m not sure whether this could cause any problems or not.
I turned off thumbnails and kept all my playback and sound on low quality with high quality scrubbing turned off.
When I experience the hang it’s when I’m scrubbing through footage in the viewer for logging purposes, not in the timeline.
I have 861 GB free on system disk.
On the Sonnet D800 I have 2.33TB available (capacity 5.46TB) – although I’m constantly creating new, shorter subclips of ProRes footage captured from full 60 minute via Media Manager so the amount of memory available will rise over the next few days.
Any more thoughts would be really appreciated!
All the best

August 1, 2009 at 11:41 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Documents folder safe to appear on system drive?Hi guys
I’ve tried deleting the FCP Documents folder from the system drive, but each time I reopen FCP, it reappears on the system drive – won’t go away.
Now that I’m heavily into logging all my material now, I’m experiencing a slow startup time (around 20-30 secs) when I open FCP and am often getting the little ‘timer’ circle popping up ‘hanging’ during playback of material in the viewer – could this be because of the FCP Documents folder that won’t go away I wonder?
I’ve made my playback ‘low’ quality and unticked ‘scrub high quality’ but am still getting the hanging every 10 mins approx (each ‘hang lasts about 5 secs’ but can be pretty irritating)
I’m using a brand new 2 x 2.66 GHz Quad-Core INtel Xeon and 8 GB Apple RAM with all software updates applied in advance of using FCP to capture my material. I’m also using a Sonnet D800 Raid 5 with 1 hot spare.
Any tips would be really appreciated!

Yep I think I would have been okay had I not restored the files. I think I’ll leave them be though just for now to play safe until I get this video edited.
Thanks again for your kind advice, and have a great weekend!

July 31, 2009 at 10:56 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Documents folder safe to appear on system drive?Hi again guys
With FCP quit I moved the FCP Documents folder that was on my system drive to trash. The folder didn’t contain any Autosave files – just 2 small Thumbnail Cache files in a Thumbnail Cache Files folder and in the Render FIles folder there is a Constant Frames folder which contains 5 small files. There is nothing in any of the other folders.
My proper FCP Documents folder still remains on my Raid 5 with all my captured material in it.
When I restarted FCP my timeline for my project had disappeared. I was unable to select it from the menu nor would it appear in any window layout e.g. standard.
I quit FCP again, retrieved the FCP Documents folder from trash and replaced it on my system drive documents folder.
Still no timeline.
I quit FCP, trashed my preferences and opened it again, and it revealed a blank project with a timeline.
However, when I opened my original project the timeline is still missing.
At this moment in time I am logging shots and haven’t starting editing in earnest. I have been titling my ProRes clips, trimming them with Media Manager, and placing the clips into Bins relating to certain themes in my video.
Is there anything I can do to retrieve my timeline please?
All the best

Could I just get anyone’s thoughts on this please?:
I’m importing ProRes 422 material into Motion (which I’d captured via HDV-ProRes422) – is the HDV 1080i50 preset still okay for me to use despite the footage being ProRes?
Thanks in advance.

July 29, 2009 at 11:18 am in reply to: Final Cut Pro Documents folder safe to appear on system drive? Thanks Victor and David for your prompt responses – I really appreciate it.
Since all the below System Settings seem to be pointing to my Sonnet D800 Raid 5 and not my 1TB internal system/boot drive do you think I would be able to delete the Final Cut Pro Documents folders on my system drive (even though they contain some small files)?
Or, should I perhaps ‘Set…’ a new setting in my System Settings to ensure that the Final Cut Pro Documents folders all stay and remain on my Sonnet D800 Raid 5, which is what I would like?
In my System Settings:
1. My Waveform Cache is set to my Sonnet D800 Raid 5: Final Cut Pro Documents
2. My Thumbnail Cache is set to my Sonnet D800 Raid 5: Final Cut Pro Documents
3. My Autosave Vault is set to my Sonnet D800 Raid 5: Final Cut Pro Documents
4. Video Capture, Audio Capture, Video Render and Audio Render are all also set to my Sonnet D800 Raid 5: Final Cut Pro Documents
Thanks again for your kind assistance.

July 28, 2009 at 5:26 pm in reply to: Can’t Connect My Edirol MA-15 Speakers To Mac ProSorry I created this fresh post by accident – this is actually a post to be added to the recent thread started by me entitled ” Can’t Connect My Edirol MA-15 Speakers To Mac Pro”
Hi Ty
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my audio query – you’re very kind.
I’ve since tested the speakers out via line out with a standard cable and can confirm the speakers work fine.
I’ve tried the ‘Setting up external speakers’ in Audio MIDI Setup Help but no joy as yet with the optical audio cable. I’ve followed this advice from the Help:
“If you are using optical digital sound output, choose “Digital Out” from the Source pop-up menu in the Audio Output section.
You can set the sample rate and bit depth in the Format pop-up menus. These should match the appropriate settings for your audio device.”
For the optical audio cable the settings I have used in Audio MIDI Setup are:
Audio Devices
System Settings
Properties For: Built-in Digital Output
Default Output: Built-in Digital Output
System Output: Built-in Digital Output
When I click on Configure Speakers I see the little diagram showing the Left and Right speakers but I don’t hear any sound when I click on either of them.
Under Audio Output ‘Master Stream’ is greyed out.
Source: Digital Out
I’m unable to increase the volume using the sliders. The volume sliders remain stuck to the left.
Under Sound
I have Digital Out Built-in Digital Output selected.
This is confusing since the product specs state “The MA-15D’s offer input from digital sources through either the Coaxial or Optical S/PDIF ports, supporting up to 24-bit/192kHz sources. With this, you can connect digital sources directly to your speakers, keeping an unadulterated audio signal all the way to the power amplifier in your speakers. Hear exactly what you have recorded!”
The digital optical cable, after I’ve plugged in into my MacPro has a small red light at the other end (its tip) which suggests to me that the cable is working, although I haven’t been able to listen via it yet!
I bought a “Toslink 3.5mm Mini Optical Cable Lead Adaptor” which unfortunately was a bad selection – as it’s designed for going from* a 3.5mm jack to a Optical Cable Head.
From the MA-15D product specs, and looking at the back of the speakers (which has a proper optical-in socket) I’m confused as to why they won’t let me hear sound. Perhaps I need a more suitable adaptor to go from my optical cable to the line-in socket on the speakers. However, this then leaves the good optical-in socket lying dormant.
I noticed some posts on various forums of people who have encountered the red light remaining on in the Mac Pro’s optical out socket remaining lit with a red light after an optical cable has been inserted into it. I have the same issue I’ve just noticed – I hope that isn’t what’s affecting the lack of digital audio reaching my speakers!
Any thoughts whatsoever would be really welcome!
All the best
Peter
