I think I’ll try sticking with CS4 first as the new MacBook is going to be significantly faster and AE will utilise most of that.
But good to know I can further increase efficiencies by upgrading!
I wonder when CS6 is due out!! 🙂

And just for clarity, CS4 can take advantage of multiprocessing as can CS5.5?

February 24, 2012 at 5:21 pm in reply to: New machine – stick with CS4 or worth upgrading?I’ll be honest, most of that has just flown over my head.
At the moment, my real struggle is that CS4 won’t even update a RAM preview of the screen for a couple of seconds whilst scrubbing. This makes it almost unworkable.
I’m sure this problem will be mostly solved by a new, faster processor and graphics card – RAM aside. But it was playing on my mind whether to upgrade to CS5.5 IF it was going to be a great deal faster than CS4 by utilising ALL the RAM (or most of it at least).
From what from you said, I understand that when it comes to the general refresh of the screen when scrubbing and when rending a comp, I probably won’t notice a BIG difference between CS4 and CS5.5 but I will be able to view more of my comp due to the capability of CS5.5 to use the 16GB of RAM to provide longer renders in the timeline. Right?
As for keeping the CPU idle and setting more RAM for other applications – not really sure what you mean here.
Also, when and for what functions does AE take advantage of Quad core processing power?
Kind regards,

Thanks for link. I’ll look it over.

So in a nutshell, both CS4 and CS5.5 can access all my memory using multiprocessing but CS5.5 is more efficient and has some great additional features?

February 24, 2012 at 4:11 pm in reply to: Creating a drop shadow on a ‘mode: multiply’ (white background)Sorry for the delay.
The shape layer is square – white with a cog in the middle. I used modes to get rid of the white (multiply) but when I add ‘effect’ drop shadow, it is still round the whole shape layer (square).
I did try layer drop shadow, but that had the same effect.
Even when I masked round the cog using autotrace and deleting the masks I didn’t need (5 were generated), it was still around the shape layer and not the cog.
I even tried creating a precomp of the layer (both moving all attributes and leaving them in the comp), but that didn’t work either.
Scratching head. Going to start from scratch and see if I can fugure it out. Brining it in from Photoshop would probably work best as AE won’t know the original shape – the square and only the cog.

Thanks, I’ll try this out!

Thought this might be to do with render order, so precomposed applying drop shadow to precomp but same issue.

February 20, 2012 at 2:56 pm in reply to: Problems with 3D objects when nesting & precomposingSo, just quickly then, I’ve got a script from AEScripts for a 3D box, I want to warp it so it animates a buldge. I would of liked to of created a pre-comp of the box layers, then added the warp, but clearly I cannot do that, so how would I go about it instead? Render out as mov with alpha channel and then apply warp?
