I would take all of these performance claims with a huge grain of salt. At least until enough are out in the wild. If you read the fine print on much of this testing, it’s made against similar Intel Macs with integrated Intel GPUs. Not against the top AMD cards or for that matter, a smoking Nvidia card in a PC.

In case it’s not self-evident, quite a few apps and plug-ins will not be compatible with Big Sur yet. Some may sort of work, but with bugs. Others won’t work at all. So be very, very careful about jumping into the deep end.

Ton of Apple App Store updates this morning, including all of the ProApps. Nearly all are Catalina or later. Mojave machines won’t even see them. Ironically GarageBand (but not iMovie) requires Big Sur.
We are now at the point that to continue to play in the Apple software ecosystem, Catalina is the minimum for most, for now, and soon Big Sur. I wonder if the next Adobe updates will support Mojave machine. Avid is the slowest and they are just now blessed for Catalina. But Media Composer does now support ProRes RAW.

I would certainly wait, especially on an older machine. The anecdotal information I’ve gleaned from developers working with the beta version is that Big Sur seems to be better behaved than Catalina. That OS for me has been a minor step backwards from Mojave.

That appears to be 10.5. At least in the fine print on the website, it mentions testing with a prerelease copy of FCPX 10.5. Although that icon could simply be a refresh for Big Sur. You’ll know tomorrow when Big Sur is officially released.

Oops. My bad. You are right. I was looking at the BTO options and must have inadvertently been looking at the current Intel model.

RAM reduction is because the RAM is integrated on the chip, like the GPU. So right now the max is 16GB.

There’s no Ethernet downgrade in the mini. The 10GbE is an option. Same as before.
