Vegas by default ignores the Alpha channel in a media file and you have to tell Vegas what to do with the Alpha channel via the media properties.

For text type renders with Alpha, the Quicktime PNG codec should compress very well, keeping the file size WAY down versus AVI uncompressed.

You have to right click the media, and tell Vegas what you want it to do with the Alpha channel. It defaults to None. There are many options, Straight should work.

Almost no codecs support Alpha channel. In Vegas AVI Video for Windows, only uncompressed supports this.

Some Quicktime codecs can support Alpha. The PNG codec can, maybe others. It should be smaller than uncompressed. I don’t know what all the PNG options mean.

Cineform can support Alpha, but not the free version of the codec. If you are really into Alpha channel rendering and want smaller files, then the Premium version might be the ticket.

The free Quicktime DNxHD codec can support Alpha but from what I have read, it get the Alpha channel backwards. Going from Vegas and back into Vegas you might still be okay.

The Vegas AVC decoder for MP4 files probably does not support 4:2:2. I know Vegas does support 422 in the XAVC MXF file format.

I know it sounds a little silly, and it is, but Vegas has unique decoders for each container format. So MXF and MP4 are different, event though AVC is always AVC. The MXF one, because it supports XAVC, also supports more profiles.

One AVC decoder for all is best and this is what VLC and other media players do.

Actions like this is where tools like Vegasaur, Ultimate S and Timeline Tools excel.

That file is using the High 4:4:4 profile. The Vegas decoder may not support that encoding profile. Try an encoding setting with a 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 profile.

Excellent. I enjoyed trying to figure this out. I learned something.

The one thing about the multiple track method is that you end up with the black background. In Protype titler, or NewBlue titler you can have multiple independently controllable text blocks in one event. With this you can use the normal/obvious technique described in the article I linked. With that you get video showing through text and everything else transparent so you can have any background you want.

    Try this.

Track 1 and 2 text are white on black. Track 2 a child of 1. Track 1 composite mode is “add”. This combines both text into a single item. White text on black. Parent composite mode on track 1 is “multiply (mask)”. This makes the text transparent.

Here is a nice article on transparent text masking

Not much info to go on, other than it is now slow, but one thing I can guess at is have you changed your preview setting. Preview/Good/Best and Auto/Half/Full. The further up this chain you go, the more PC you need to keep playback up to speed. Also did you change your project setting from 8 to 32-bit.

Using Legacy text, moving the text around the screen in done with the placement tab in the Text effect.

The text on track one will not show your base video on track 3. You have given little information, but it looks like text events with transparent for the text color and black for the background. The text on track one is going to see nothing but black, and not the video on track three, everywhere except where the track 2 text exists.

If this is what you want, then maybe something like this, using the composite parent/child features. The video is duplicated on a couple of tracks and each text event masks the video of the video track beneath it, which is a composite child. You can click the image to see something bigger.

  • I have thought of keyframing a mask on the event with the logo. The mask hiding and then revealing the logo.
