I’m in my mid 20s Bob. I got lucky and kind of skipped ever formally working as an AE, so my technical side is a little weak when I’m doing everything myself. May I ask why you wanted to know?

And for more clarification on the original question, I was debating investing in doubling my internal drive from 2-4TB, vs 2 with an updated external hard drive. Ended up going with the latter. Decided with Thunderbolt 3 speeds I could just keep adding newer externals as they get better anyway.

Running out of space on the internal would be the issue, I was just thinking that potentially if it was big enough I could work from there (at least with the DNxHD36 transcodes) while working on each project, since I’m rarely tackling a few at a time (I work a day job as a trailer editor, this is all on the side). Sounds like I’m still best saving the money and updating my externals then based on your response. Wasn’t sure if there was a sweet spot in terms of number of drives and what we put where, figured I’d ask before I bought the next setup.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I ended up trying the various solutions, but I’m pretty new to AE and ran into a time crunch. So I ended up going with the original suggestion of mesh warp. It required a good bit of keyframing to try and recreate a natural kind of flow, but it did the job well enough.

Had a very similar problem on my 2012 Macbook Pro running MC7, it was crashing at “audio plugins” for me. I went through and found some audio plugins (compressors, etc) that I had copied across multiple drives hooked up to the computer for extra crash insurance. Deleting one copy of those with multiples (of these plugins) seemed to help it clear up. I also went back and double checked that any old Avid projects all had inactive filenames for Mediafiles etc, and trashed any user settings I found (a duplicate was snuck into one of my old projects. So in general maybe just do a little spring cleaning and see what you can find. Mine has cleared up, but I’m not totally sure why.

As a (very) interim solution, I could usually get Avid to startup if I did a computer restart then opened Avid as soon as I was back up and running. Very odd.

No problems, appreciate the concern! Should have been more clear anyway: The “originals” I referred to were copies themselves, I have a production drive and a separate backup drive, so these were just the “originals” on the production drive. So I was never planning on deleting them entirely, just from my drive the rest of the project was on. Cheers

Update on this: Worked like a charm with the above suggestions, went offline with DNxHD 36s for editing, relinked the H.264s and it populated perfectly – had to go through and manually re-link 1 or 2 folders, but that was it. Ended up transcoding the H.264s to DNxHD 175x for export. I never did end up deleting the H.264s from the drive altogether though, just edited on a bigger drive and kept them there.

I had to restart Avid as I was responding last, and after restart have discovered my highest red option for Transcode on the sequence is DNxHD 175x. Have I missed a step somewhere?

Many thanks for the informative post. Like I said, I desperately need to brush up on my codec’s etc. The transcode to DNxHD 220x sounds like a great option, my only two followups would be: Will non Avid programs have any issues with playback, and I would then want to export with a Same as Source option, yes?

Michael, it’s a roughly 25 minute film with a bunch of effects etc so I transcoded all of the footage first just to help the computer handle it all (plus I’m running a MacBook Pro, even decked out this thing can’t rival a tower) especially because it’s an older FireWire drive. So if I understand both you and Bill correctly, if I transcoded everything I can dump the original H.264s until I go to export out a master?

On the same line of thinking, when I relink those do they need to be in the same spot, or could I have them in a different drive (but organized in an identical folder) when I relink?

Thanks for the help, I love editing on Avid but the file management can drive me up the walls sometimes.
