Correction to my last posting: Matrox’s 1080p29.97 is in fact 1080i59.94 but their 720p29.97 really is 720p30.

    Hi Jeremy,

Thanks again very much for taking the time to explain all of this too me and also posting the clips.

I am a bit troubled about upconverting 480i29.97 to 720p59.94 since this would give me twice the number of frames making the duplicates redundant. 720p29.97 seems to be the sweet spot for me since my old interviews were all shot on DV at 29.97 and i would not be adding any extra frames. Just curious if you’ve used the MXO2 to upconvert to 720p29.97 or 1080p29.97? I’m not sure if Matrox doesn’t actually mean 720p30 and 1080p30 when they use those terms.

I just did a burn test with Adobe Encore with my upconverted 720p29.97 footage and everything looked good. My FCP sequence had upconverted 720p29.97 footage mixed with some GH1 footage shot at 1080p24 and did a great job of handling these different formats in the same timeline. The sequence codec setting was set to pro res 720p29.97

    Yes Jeremy,

Thank you very much, I did. I was surprised to see how good Compressor is at upconverting your SD 1930s footage to HD. I couldn’t tell the difference between the Compressor upconverted HD footage and the Kona upconverted HD footage. Even after looking at both several times.

After changing the frame rate of my SD footage from 29.97 to 24P while still SD, I got good results, as you said. I just wish that my MXO2 upconverted 720p29.97 footage could translate as flawlessly into 24P as my SD clips did.

    Hi Shane,

Sorry, you’re right HD Connect SI is no longer available on Convergent Design’s web site or even BH Photo Video. But Video Guys is still selling it for $795:

But I don’t have any HDV footage. Are you recommending I get this device because of my Sony M35U deck? Because all the footage I have to upconvert is DV only.

    Hi SHane,

Actually I am using firewire as deck control. But which Convergent Design box did you have in mind?

    Hi SHane,

But I had no HDV footage actually. It was all DV that I was trying to upconvert. Are you saying the M35U is not reliable? I had purchased it because it was the least expensive VTR deck I found with SDI.
What mini-DV VTR deck to you recommend?

    Hi Jeremy and Shane,

Thank you both so much for your continued help with my upconvert and frame rate change issue.

Shane, I made sure to do the frame rate conversion in Compressor as you recommend in your article. The only difference is that my source footage was DV-NTSC 480i29.97 and that I had chosen Apple Pro Res 422 720p29.97 instead of DVCPRO HD 720p59.94.

Jeremy, I’ll be sure to try converting the frame rate starting with the SD footage and I’ll watch your videos now. Thank you again for posting the site.

Just one Matrox issue to mention. I don’t know if either of you have come across this problem but I discovered that at least one other person on the Matrox MXO2 forum had run into this issue:

My FCP “Log and Capture” is reporting “broken timecode” when in fact there is NO broken timecode on my tape. The weird thing is that I didn’t have this problem with my Kona LHi capture card or when I was capturing directly from my Sony M35U VTR, only only when the footage was being captured and upconverted via my MXO2. This happened when trying to capture and upconvert to MXO2 Pro Res 720p29.97, MXO2 Pro Res 720p59.94, and MXO2 Pro Res 1080i29.97.

To be fair, this only occured on one tape, but it can’t be the tape because Kona LHi didn’t report “broken timecode”. The 9 minutes of footage showed up broken into 5 clips with actually only 2 minutes of footage and the rest just a black blank image. Total mystery.
