  • Thank you very much for that guidance, Mark! That’s a big help as usual. ‘Unlisted’ seems a lot easier, so I’ll plan on doing that.

    Much appreciated,
    Neil

  • Much appreciated, Graham. But you still have to specify their email addresses, right? I hadn’t used the ‘private’ setting before a recent upload, but when I did, Youtube required I set ‘who can view,’ like in the attached screenshot.

And other people, not on the list, couldn’t view, even if they had the link. Has that been your experience? That’s one reason I’m not sure ‘private’ works in this case. We’re planning to release a series of videos that we want to share with reporters before making them public, and that could be a large and fluid list. Thus specifying their emails like this may not be practical. But your approach would work great if, as you said, anyone with the link could view, and I was certain the video wasn’t visible on our channel.

  • Thank you for the time saving tip, Mark! I do a fair amount of scanning, at least lately, so I’ll definitely look at this setting.
    Much appreciated,
    Neil

  • Thanks very much, Jeff! I appreciate that, and couldn’t have done it without your great and easy-to-follow tips. What a difference!
And I’ll definitely look at the desaturation point too, which might add that extra bit of realism. Good thought.
    Thanks again,
    Neil

PS – Photoshop really is amazing, especially when you know how to get the most out of it. 🙂

  • So helpful, thank you Jeff! I did both those things, including finding a nice texture online like you said, and really appreciate the additional tips. Below is what I have at this point, so just let me know if you have any additional feedback.
    Much appreciated again,
    Neil

  • Thank you Jeff! Your guidance on using a Levels layer was perfect and so easy to follow! I appreciate it. Below is what it looks like now, so just let me know if you have any feedback on this so far. From here, I’m trying to play with your other good thoughts for adding some color, noise and paper texture. I definitely like that old book idea, as long as it’s clear, which you’ve thankfully solved. I see how to ‘add noise’ but wasn’t sure how to give it a paper texture. Could you offer any brief tips there? For the color I’ve been trying to insert a solid color above the image layer, and bring the opacity way down. But for some reason I can’t figure out how to add a solid layer in Photoshop. So my last question was if you or anyone else has any quick tips there? Or just let me know if there’s a reason Multiply/blend mode method is better.
    Much appreciated again,
    Neil

Thanks very much Blaise. I’d actually asked B&H for their recommendation, and the Logitech c922 was one of the ones they suggested. We were looking for a good but simple webcam that non-technical people here could operate, which would look good for our Facebook Lives. But as you described this webcam, the image looks cheap and crappy to me. For you and anyone else seeing this, I’d be grateful for any feedback on these two questions: what’s the least you can spend to get a nicer image in a webcam? And could you please recommend any?

The balance we’re trying to strike is simple solutions that laymen can operate, but with a decent image. For example, I’d be satisfied with the quality of my Macbook’s internal camera, which is the second half of this short sample clip with the password ‘webcam’: https://vimeo.com/331848730
My Macbook isn’t an option for these events, so an external webcam with similar or better quality, which, if possible, costs no more than a few hundred dollars (I work at a nonprofit). And finally we want to keep this in the world of USB-connected webcams, rather than more complicated set-ups with prosumer camcorders.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Never mind on this one, I came up with another solution.
    Thanks, Neil

By the way I discovered the clip in question (the one of the girl speaking) has a frame rate of 17.98, and it’s in a 29.97 sequence. Could that be what’s causing the interruption and flickering green color around the :37 mark? I actually tried creating a 17.98 frame rate sequence though, and the problem persisted. Any thoughts much appreciated!

  • Changing the font size worked perfectly, thank you Blaise!! I thought it would lose resolution/quality, but it didn’t at all.
    Much appreciated,
    Neil
