[citizendanny] “Even old shows(Magnum p.i., Twin peaks, etc.) have the film look – even though this was predigital, so were they shot on video and what camcorders where they using?”

Those shows were shot on 35mm.

Aha. The cameras downconvert too, but will not letterbox, only anamorphic and center-cut, so I thought the fact that you needed letterbox was the issue.

If you’re looking for a simple dub solution from XDCAM deck to DVD recorder deck (this is what you’re talking about, yes?)…

You could save some money by seeing if you can find a DVD recorder that allows you to set a 16×9 flag. The analog signal from F70 deck would be anamorphic, recorded to DVD as anamorphic, and then if the recorder sets a 16×9 flag, then the DVD player will letterbox for you. Follow?

I’ve never owned a stand-alone DVD recorder, so I don’t know if any of these devices do this. I would imagine there’s one out there that does. Maybe they all do.

[Steve Wargo] “Have you had any reliability problems? “

Not so far, but the shooting work has been a little slow for me since I picked it up in Sept.

I’ve so far been successful in educating one client to the joys of XDCAM HD, a motion graphics house here in L.A. that often has to shoot elements on green. Even though they’re doing work for networks, the section of the budget for shooting anything often gets squeezed more than anything else, so XDHD fits in nicely.

Shot elements for a show open 3 weeks ago…guess it’s called “Shear Genius” on Bravo. So far they’ve told me the keys have been fine.

[Steve Wargo] “The long GOP thing is a bump in the road”

It was barely even a bump in the road on my NLE. I’ve been successfully editing native HDV/XDCAM for over a year now. Exactly one MPEG decompress cycle, then color/graphics, then uncompressed to HDCAM or whatever. The MPEG never gets recompressed to anything but the HDCAM codec as it goes to tape.

  • Credence as in, it was so low that they decided it needed fixing and that has been one of the reasons the camera has been delayed.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter. They’re saying what it is now, so it sure doesn’t matter what it might have been a year ago. I also think it’s a smart move on their part to have waited for a better sensor, if they did…things seem to be happening uber fast with CMOS sensors at the moment. JVC did the same thing when they decided to can their full-size HD camera.

Black eye for Sony? I thought it was a bit weird/dumb for Panasonic to be making a big deal of it when their biggest competitor had done that just last year with their competing tapeless product.

I’ve had my 350 since Sept and unfortunately had precious few jobs since then (was smoking busy shooting all last summer). I had been happy with the camera…and then I just did 5 days of shooting near the Salton Sea in CA. Lots of blowing sand, lots of becoming one with the camera using it 14 hours a day.

After getting back and getting a good look at my material, I can say I’m even more happy with my purchase decision than I had been previous, and that’s saying something. I had an HVX with me for small camera work, and I assumed after downconverted to SD they’d both look pretty similar…but it’s clear now that the 350 has a lot more perceived latitude…it’s just a much much more refined looking image than you’d guess from such a small jump in chip size.

That and mechanically, the camera held up fine. The dirt and weird temperatures affected me zero.

When I’ve tried to digitize tape-style from my PDW-F350 using FCP, I’ve run into this problem as well.

For those reading along, the NLEs don’t seem to be able to accept the fact that the “tape deck” can magically move forwards and backwards in time.

  • I was about to say that the Infinity was due about 9 months ago, and is smelling like vaporware.

BUT, I followed your first link about the “Xenium” sensor, and it appears the Inifnity has been held up because they’re upgrading to this new CMOS sensor.

There was a rumor a little while ago that the sensor in the Infinity had a pretty low pixel count. This new info gives that rumor credence. Glad to see new CMOS sensors coming as well…I like them things.

January 29, 2007 at 9:09 am in reply to: F900 vs HDX900 Why we had a shoot off

I suppose you’re entitled to your opinion, but since I’d characterize the HDX as being the same res as a Varicam, but with newer and cleaner chips/DSP, I sure as heck wouldn’t consider the HDX being as high res as a F900, nor would I really consider the two to be competitors for the same job.

The HDX is a great camera…but I wouldn’t use it on a job I’d usually use a 900 on, if I needed all the 900 can give.
