incidentally how is the realtime playback of MXF files (P2 or EX1) in Premiere? Do those formats take as much juice as HDV and AVCHD to playback smoothly?

everything is standard def DV, 4:3, 720×480.

Since my last post I have been successful in editing my project with all of my lower thirds deleted. For whatever reason, the other half dozen supers are stable, but the lower thirds make the project as stable as a 1940’s office building in an earthquake. This explains why I had so much trouble.

I make my titles by opening a title, then hitting the button which makes a copy of the title under a new name, so as to not have to re-create anything. Could doing this repeatedly create corrupt titles? The titles become part of the project file, which IMHO is stupid, so it stands to reason the whole project would go south if there is a bad title.

Before I made my sans title project, I exported each title to a file.

In my new project, whenever I imported one of the titles, the project became unstable.

As a final experiment, I imported the old titles into a completely new project with all new video, and the project became unstable.

Finally, even with my stable title free project, I had problems exporting my timeline to a file. Error compiling movie. I had to export in 5 smaller pieces, then re-assemble in a new project, make new titles and I’m done.

I suppose I could have created the new titles in the stable title free project, but why ruin a good thing?

Two additional things since my last post.
The importing of titles exported from earlier version of the project makes the project slightly less stable. I may end up re-creating the titles – only about 2 dozen – not the end of the world.
I had imported some Digital Juice jumpbacks, using Apple Animation codec, which retains alpha channels – those files once on a timeline really make things grind. Obviously importing AVI versions of the jumpbacks is the solution, however the animated lower thirds with alpha channel would have to be fudged with a static track matte rather than matched animated alpha. Oh well.

Of course the project was totally unstable before the jumpbacks so that is a second issue.

As i have said , all other projects are quite stable. There must be a bad piece of media.

project is now stable – tried importing the titles previously exported before deleting. Added a couple titles to a sequence and things went south – C++ runtime error or some such thing.
Seems I will have to re-create my titles.
I am now thinking I will export an AVI of my edited program clean, then add the supers in a separate project.
Well, gotta catch an early flight so I’ll pick this up Tuesday.

I was about to report back that switching to my Dell laptop, which is normally very stable, the problem project was working better. Indeed it was working better until I got a Serious error has occurred – which I never get on this machine.
So the problem is clearly something about the project.
Next I deleted almost all of the titles from this seemingly stable project. It actually worked pretty well, until a serious problem occurred.
So now having tried three different computers, I am puzzled.
Sorry for all the posts.
The is the only project with these problems – all other premiere projects work pretty well. Not sure what it is about this project, but I’ll have to make it work.
