See where I am going with this? Don’t focus on what software and hardware you know – unless those are specific requirements for a job – focus on on telling them what you have done, and use examples that show you are a valuable team member who does excellent work. That’s what I would want to know about you.
Don’t hesitate to customize your resume for the specific job to which you are applying. Be honest about your experience, but recognize that not all of your experience is applicable to the job to which you are applying.

I certainly support the use of Creative COW’s reels section for hosting your own reel or other sample videos, however you obviously could not host proprietary video content for a paying client on a free service that is open to the public.
I am doing a trial of Sorenson 360 right now – it seems to work nicely. We also use Wowza server which works very well.
Prices on both of these are reasonable.Mike Cohen

We do our pricing estimates in Excel – but the client never sees this. Once we do the excel worksheet we know what our actual costs are, and what our minimum price will be. Then we break it down into milestones, deliverables and line items and write our proposal using…wait for it….MS Word.
People don’t want a fancy shmancy proposal with colors and pie charts – they want to know how much it will cost them and what they will get and when they will get it. Just be descriptive enough to get the point across and brief enough that they will actually read it. They will first go to the last page and look at the price, then maybe go back and read.
Focus on the message – don’t let the tail wag the dog.

I agree – great post from Rob.
Hunter, don’t think we are beating you up telling you to work hard to learn everything – this is advice that no college professor will ever give you.
My tv professor in college was a great mentor and friend to me – but he basically taught us how to use the gear and then waited for the cream to rise to the top – then he would nurture the best students who showed an aptitude for learning and an attitude for wanting to learn.
Hunter is showing, however, a trait not often seen in college students – asking people with more experience for help.

I would rather rent a light kit for $100 than pay an extra $400 to use my own.
I went to Canada last year – I took my own tripod as it is specifically configured for what we do, but I rented a camera and monitor locally – much easier.
Also, given differences in electrical systems, using rented, insured gear that is known to work in the country’s electrical system offers peace of mind as well. Plus you have the support of the rental house should something fail. it is difficult to have your own gear malfunction when you are away from your usual resources for repair or replacement. And travel, especially airline travel, increases the chances of damage. A baggage handler is trained to handle production cases less gently than suitcases 😉

Cost of doing business. We pay excess fees on every domestic airline except Southwest. Sometimes they have a media discount, but each airline employee seems to interpret the rules differently.
You could ship global freight, but likely you will have customs issues.Don’t forget to get an ATA Carnet, and remember to get it stamped by customs before you leave each country, or there could be hefty fines – you don’t want to get customs on your case.
Or rent gear locally.
Read the blog posts from New Merry Pranksters – they have dealt with these issues, as have many of us on this forum.

I thought CS5 was supposed to work with DSLR files natively and in real time – according to the video demos on Adobe’s website anyway – LOL.
On the PC we are limited to native or Cineform, or transcoding in real time via a capture card. If Adobe was clever, they would have integrated Prores into CS5.
