Please don’t take this the wrong way Chris, but why in the world would ANYONE have the same passion for your business as you do. That’s like a parent saying I can’t find a nanny that loves my children the way I do. Now having a passion for the work, that’s a different story. But there is a fine line between passion and obsession. My wife worked for hospice for many years and not once did someone who was dying declare that they wished they had worked harder and spent less time with family and friends.

As in many industries, how this economy is affecting things runs the gamut from those closing their doors to those actually increasing business. For me I guess it’s somewhere in between. January was OK, February absolutely sucked with March picking up a bit. As of yesterday, it looks like April will pick up the slack for the whole quarter! I can’t believe how many jobs I have on the books so far. I believe the increase is due in large part to a marketing push I did in February. Nothing huge, but it got me in the habit of promoting my business everywhere I went. Looks like it’s paying off.
One thing I will say that has made this whole thing easier is low overhead, access to credit, and cash reserves. Without those things in place, I would have been stressed to the max which makes me worthless at just about anything. With those things in place, I was able to relax, take things in stride, do some extra marketing, learn some new revenue generating skills, do some pro bono work, and most of all keep a level head.

Ahh to heck with it.
I’m gonna go shoot some video on my outdated and obsolete EX-1, come back to the studio, ingest it into my outdated and obsolete Macpro quad, edit and render it and hand the client an outdated and obsolete SD DVD and make some money. TTFN!!!

Sorry I didn’t get back sooner. Thanks for taking the time to respond. The files were captured in FCP Log and Capture as uncompressed HD files. I’ve compressed one file in Compressor using the HDV 1080i codec. It took it from 350 gigs down to 8 gigs and when played back to back with the original uncompressed file in QT, it is indistinguishable from the original. Do you have an opinion on this method I really wouild like to delete the originals as I only have 2TB of storage and these 3 files eat up almost 900G.

This might be somewhat true for a handful of major acts, but for 99.9% of touring bands, it’s the exact opposite. Most bands nowadays have to come to the table of a record deal with a proven product that has sold “at retail price” upwards of 10,000 units. Granted retail price is subjective, but most bands I know including my own are selling CD’s for $10-15. Since venues pay less and less these days, bands need to charge a decent amount for product to make any money at all.

Bingo!!! I’m deathly slow right now. New jobs are trickling in but ever so slowly. So here’s what I’m doing along with the occasional slack off day.

– Started a new performing duo to help make ends meet
– Doing pro bono work for non profits who need and deserve itOh, and did I mention marketing. It is tough right now for a lot of us. But keeping busy, upping the skills, and doing whatever it takes to stay positive is key.
