[Bob Zelin] “because I cannot take it out on my clients, I take it out on you Richard”

[Mark Suszko] “We used to quote that way; in the 80’s, we’d quote a thousand bucks per “finished” minute of the final program. I think you would be crazy to bill that way now, today, because the technical and economic variables are completely different. If you did a project that DID work out to about $1k/min, it would be totally by coincidence these days. “

Interestingly, most projects I’m doing right now work out to be within 20% of this old rule. But I live in a world of coincidence! TBTG!

[Mark Suszko] “‘m sorry, Aaron; I went for the cheap laugh at your expense.”

Does this mean I have to apologize to Bob??

[Bob Zelin] “and they would charge NINETY DOLLARS AN HOUR for me in 1978, while I stood there FOR FREE (no overtime, no compensation, not even for parking my car at the location) on a Friday night, while they were at home, having dinner on my labor, while all the other film crew freelancers were charging insane rates, doing their jobs as grips, gaffers, video assists, and everything else, working overtime on a Friday night, while I got NOTHING – ZERO.”

Maybe they were just trying to piss you off so you’d quit without them having to fire you. Looks like it worked!!

[grinner hester] “You’d have to wear nice breeches”

Breeches??? Really?? Breeches?? I think you meant britches which is the more common spelling and usually refers to trousers or pants in casual conversation. Breeches on the other hand are no longer worn accept by some equestrians or those engaging in period acting as breeches fall just below the knee. Honestly Grinner, if he wore breeches to work, not paying his bosses a cut of some freelance work would be the least of his worries. And that’s all I’ve got to say about that!!

and to anyone who might misconstrue this post, it was meant as nonsense only due to a very long shoot yesterday and a severe lack of sleep last night….must…..sleep…..now……..

[Nick Griffin] “At least we still have electricity and internet service”

Most of us anyway. We’ve got thousands without power here on Thee Eastern Shore Nick. How’s everyone holding up “over there”…we are also in a state of emergency with no driving. Glad I’ve got showshoes. Never thought I’d need them here!!

February 6, 2010 at 1:10 pm in reply to: A personal note to all 3D TV pessimists

I just got called in to consult on a project with a local arena(taxpayer owned) that is putting in a Digital Signage network as well as an IMAG system for the arena. Unfortunately they have to take the lowest bid on this and you’ll never guess what cameras the installation company specked out for the IMAG system. Canon GL2’s……FREAKIN GL2’s!!!! They bought 2 high end 8′ LCD panels that must have cost gobs of cash and they’re going to feed them with FREAKIN GL2’s!!!! They can’t even do 16×9 SD!!!

I have no fear of having to upgrade to 3D any time soon….

Funny how a thread on cold calling ended up being hijacked into a thread about world finances and politics.

Thank you for your insight Bob. I appreciate you and sincerely hope you continue entertaining us and informing us with your always colorful albeit curmudgeonly responses. There’s room for everyone at the table eh?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sometimes I think it’s me being overly sensitive. We have so many different ways to communicate these days I think it’s important to be reminded to show some basic courtesies that can get overlooked if we’re not careful.
