IMO there is only one choice, the EX3 for the 1/2 sensors, the viewfinder, the remote RM-B150 paint box port, the Fujinon ACM-21 2/3 lens adapter option and the use of the MxR/SDHC media card solution.
When a 2/3 unit comes out at these prices it will be the new sheriff in town, until then the EX3 stands alone.

I think the firmware limits the through put on the EX camera so that class 2 cards are all that is needed.
Craig may have some other ideas to help you and I’m sure he will when he can.I know you can’t pull out the card while the red record light is still on, that will destroy the card.
I might try formatting as fat 32 on my computer and or copying a BPAV folder to it then try in the camera.

I know Craig Seeman uses the SanDisk 32 gig cards, and I believe his are labelled class 2.
There has been talk of counterfeit SDHC cards for sale out there, hopefully you purchased from a place you can return them.Good Luck

If you are using an early EX1 you will need a firmware update. If you have the newer firmware then try the other slot as some of my SDHC Transcend cards needed a second attempt.

I think this DCV Pro HD is really a 960×720 resolution from those 2/3 inch CCD’s and is interpolated up to 1280×720 resolution, the EX series is a true 1920×1080 chip set. IMO these 1/2 CMOS sensors are much better than those old 2/3 CCD’s you think so highly of. Panasonic is moving on to 3-MOS (CMOS) chips and higher HD format resolution. Until you move up to the HPX-3000 the Sony units IMO are a better deal.
If you really need to compare something else to the Sony you may want to include the HPX-300 Panasonic. Yet another 1/3 inch chip set.
I can’t imagine you are having low light issues with the EX.

You may not need to light this wall, you be the judge of this. Some like to separate their subject with a rimlight/backlight and some like half lit highlights on walls.“For tighter work as you mentioned, are you saying move the fresnel around to the side more because the light might be too harsh for close camera shots? ”
No, I’m saying I would move it back around for a more dramatic look for the performance. A fresnel IMO is kind enough to use as a key light for a wide shot at this distance, If you have the time to adjust the light for tighter work try this and see if it works for you. If you do have the time you may like the fresnel raw as you have first set it or you may like it a little softer by adding some diffusion. Some like to protect the subjects faces from reflective light and some like what you describe as a harsh look. You decide if what works best for the project. I believe less light helps drive a dramatic atmosphere so don’t be afraid to turn lights off for tight work.Good Luck

This doesn’t surprise me as the Red scales down the active use of their sensor if the resolution setting is reduced. Soon enough we will know how many Bayer pattern pixels are really needed by these sensors to interpolate the superior 4:2:2 1080×1080 HD resolution. I’m sure some here know this answer, but my point is that it will help those who want another measurable specification when judging between any camera.Good Luck

Use of SDHC memory is a real option for both the EX1 and EX3 cameras. Early EX1 units need a firmware update to ensure compatibility.
I believe the MxM brand was created because the MxR brand and partnership broke up however both brands are equal as they use the same manufacturer to make these readers.
I purchased the first MxR readers and they have been excellent together with the Transcend class 6 16 gig SDHC cards.
If you research MxR/SDHC you will find many posts on what this combination can and can’t do.

Only if you really know how to use it and it will make the difference in the look you are going for. So many times when I travel I don’t really get enough time or man power to setup and if you end up taking it and you don’t really use it you will just spend needless time worrying about it. I like these DoF adapters and they are getting better all the time. If you leave the Letus behind you may want a monopod, i find the EX-1 on a monopod is great for run and gun handheld work.
As far as the locks go , it can’t hurt to have them. Just make sure you have the camera, batteries, storage hard drive, and the SxS cards with you at all times so you come home with something.
