I have worked on plenty of process trailer jobs and have seen many different setups so depending on the time of day/night you choose to shoot and the field of view you are looking for would help us help you.

It sounds like day time and a couple of 4K PAR HMI’s (medium or wide lenses) would be nice, and diffusing the windshield (applying some diffusion, 216/250) would give you a nice solid source. If the side windows are down you might want to rig a net (single or double) out side the car to control the back ground. This is in most cases the standard rig. And I assume you will have a real camera car with a small generator to run the lights.

If you did shoot at night you might get away with Kino Flos but it would be very moody.

Before I’d ever consider a hard drive system I would compare all the options for solid state cards and even the cost of an external digital HD recorder that would allow you to take full advantage of the EX camera.

The Convergent Design “Nano Flash” can not only save you time when re-wrapping the original media but it may also save you money in the long run with solid state media. THe Nano Flash can wrap your files as Quicktime or MXF so you can edit without losing valuable time re-wrapping the EX files. I have a few 64gig PhotoFast G Monster CF cards and they are capable of 220Mbps bit rate, this is near uncompressed quality and a far cry from the capabilities of any XD Cam Camera.

The Nano Flash currently can record up to 280 Mbps bit rate and depending on the bit rate you with use the Compact Flash cards are a much better value than the SDHC cards. If you choose the EX3 model Auton Bauer can supply a battery adapter solution for powering not only the EX camera but the Nano Flash and even a on board monitor. There are off brand solutions to the gold mount batteries that are far less than the original SONY LARGE BATTERIES.

This would be my first consideration moving forward with the camera package. The SDHC adapters are a low cost investment but the quality of the Nano and extremely affordable CF media can produce the best quality form the EX camera and you can use both of these solutions at the same time for a completely redundant recording, this would make not only you feel comfortable but also your clients.

Hey Jim,

Sorry for any confusion, I thought the Kona 2 was only SD, you are right it is both SD and HD, however I believe it is a PCI-x card and when you pull the trigger for an 8 core it may not work as the newer Mac’s are PCIe slots.
When I was shopping a few years ago I discounted the Kona 2 because of this, and somehow my memory recalls it as SD and the real issue was the slot type, my bad.

As I said I edit on my Mac Book PRO (INTEL) so this maybe an option and you could support this with the Matrox (MXO2) products if you have the need to be portable.

BTW I would love the new 12 core Mac Pro if I could afford it.

I think I’d start with an HD Kona card (LHe) , however I edit tons of stuff with my MacBookPRO without a monitor. You don’t need a faster computer but it would be nice.

Open XD Transfer and add the folder where the (BPAV) media is, then highlight all the clips and export. Make sure to set up the Preferences for where you want the converted files to land.

By using the EX camera to play the clips out to SDI then capturing to a computer is basically a waist of time unless you need to re-encode the native EX files to match something else or for major compositing work.

So after reading this post you must have choose the Quicktime file format on the Flash XDR. These file are completely editable with Final Cut Pro.

So you recorded at 180 Mbps, what file format (wrapper) did you choose? MXF or Quicktime (.mov)????

I use the Red Rock Encore 35mm lens adapter and here are a couple videos to show how well it works with the EX STOCK LENS.

One of the main picture profile tweaks is to reduce the detail level to -20 or lower and then start adjusting the Gamma settings.
