  • So far very happy with 5D2RGB it’s as good as native encode through FcP7 and FCPX

    Thanks

Almost 2 years later and it seems many of these rudimentary long form editing features are still missing please send in those product enhancement requests!!

MARKER TEXT SHOULD BE SEARCHABLE BEYOND JUST FINDING THE CLIP
A text search should highlight the text found in the markers just like a web page search in say safari where the found words are highlighted and you can use a back forward arrow to cue.

    KEYWORD FILTER SEARCH WINDOW LIMITATION
The keyword filter search window is so limited in size it makes long form editing so very difficult to manage once you get past 30 keywords. The window needs to scale, this is killing the most powerful editing feature of the software, relational database editing!

    UNDO MARK
C’mon apple, the undo command should undo the last mark, sometimes it takes a minute to find that right mark and one accidental button push and you can’t get it back. This is editing 101

The more I use FCPX the more it seems the development team is either ignoring long form editors or no one really has long form expertise. Hopefully if we keep sending those product enhancement requests someone will listen as the overall concept of FCPX is heading into the future

Thank goodness FCPX is evolving, guess it’s up to us to keep giving them feedback and finding work arounds till the software catches up with the Pros…

Picking just the right in or out point sometimes takes a bit of effort, back timing calculations, that perfect moment in a music video. Undo when accidentally losing a mark is standard functionality in most edit systems for 20 years now for good reason, it took effort to make that choice!

I am hoping everyone submits feedback to Apple that undo when marking is essential and it’s omission a gross oversight.

Meanwhile relational database editing is definitely the future, so I’m in like rest of you to find a way to make things work in the meantime…

PS Another one is the inability to edit a keyword in or out point in the event viewer. The field is there, can’t be that difficult to code.

  • Hi Robin,

    FAVORITES
Funny thing about naming favorites in event manager, FCPX wasn’t originally designed to do this, it was an added feature in one of their revisions which explains why it hasn’t made it into the timeline index. It’s true if you didn’t name them they would clutter up the timeline index with the repeated word “Favorite”, good point. Having a check box option to include them or not would be the way to go to address multiple work flows, specifically your workflow where you rename favorites.

    METADATA OVERLAYS
I agree with you that having tons of text over the clip in the timeline is annoying and not clean when you don’t want it. Once again having a check box to choose what you want (including “none”) for overlay metadata is the way to go. You could choose “none” or view a variety of metadata should you need it. One example of how a powerful metadata overlay is a marker note that describes dialogue. These notes make ALL the difference when you are looking at clips in your timeline that visually look all the same (like talking heads). The metadata becomes useful as a quick way to differentiate allowing you to reorder shots without even listening to them! The list of uses go on and on but yes having the ability to totally turn them off for that refreshing clean look should be there too 😉

Appreciate the feedback, it’s great to exchange these ideas…

  • Hi Robin,

Previously I started using your method of naming favorites but discovered the favorite names DO NOT show up in the timeline index ;( It’s important to me in long form to watch the timeline index and see clip descriptions given the amount of material, as always I’ve sent a feature request to Apple. Apparently the checks in the mail for everyone’s de-bugging efforts 😉

Currently I’m exploring using markers as a drill down to detail note beyond the keywords, then favoriting the best bits. That way if I do a text search for the marker details and filter using favorites, only the best stuff will be selected, at least that’s an idea. Others have pointed out that text searches for markers pulls the entire clip, the favorite filter helps this challenge. Obviously using keywords would be ideal for cross referencing and whittling down material but until the Smart Collection tiny filter search window issue is fixed, having too many keywords makes the most powerful feature of the software unusable. For now using markers also allows me to see my marker notes in timeline index, this is crucial. I’m sure they will fix the Smart Collection issue once I’m 4 months into my edit LOL!

The only thing that I don’t like with the marker method is I like to place markers just before the bite starts (say 10 frame handles), that way I can click on the marker in the event window, hit play and voila I can easily review the material marker by marker. The problem with this is that my eventual edit point is going lose this little bit of handle so I will lose the marker info in the timeline index once the material is in the timeline. I’m now placing the marker a moment after the bite starts which cuts off the head a little when reviewing material before editing but it’s the only way I can make that valuable logging info show up in timeline index until apple adds favorites to the index. Once again it seems like an eventual fix as EVERY OTHER type of tagging is included in timeline index and yes I’ve sent a feature request to Apple.

In a perfect world the favorite name would also be included as a text overlay option on the clip icons while in the project timeline, that and more. Sadly this is the only data that you can display as it stands now:

    Angles
    Roles
    Clip Names

Many NLE’s allow the display of a variety of data on a clip in the timeline. Sure it gets truncated when small but when you zoom in this can be very helpful during play down. At a glance you can learn so much about a clip and there is no need to match to the source to explore. Sent a request to Apple, here are some examples of things that we should have the option to display on clips in the timeline AND in the event viewer for that matter:

    marker notes
    to dos
    chapters
    timecode
    favorite name
    clip resolution

Meanwhile until FCPX catches up it’s time to find work arounds. As always appreciate the response and any other ideas from the forum. Where FCPX falls short of standard features in the professional market it’s on the forefront of relational database editing, the future, and for that I am thankful. I hope this thread is stirring ideas and helping others like so many other threads have helped me 😉

  • I back up once a day… Not sure how swapping the “CurrentVersion.fcpevent” file will work now, gonna keep testing, but it was fantastic pre 10.1!

Doesn’t seem that the designers at Apple have enough professional advisors to realize once you have duplicate media on another system you should no longer need to exchange media files other than renders etc, it should simply be a matter of swapping the pointer files in this case: “CurrentVersion.fcpevent”

I’m betting Apple will catch up and I have of course sent this to FCPX feedback. Meanwhile back to making it all work with the tools provided 😉

  • Jeremy I think you are right regarding loading less events…

Have you tried the swapping of “”CurrentVersion.fcpevent”” file when working across different machines?

I’ve been doing it for a year with great results, no media management needed and very small fast file exchange…

  • Hi Jeremy,

I fear you are right that horsing around in library is not ideal… I like your idea as it’s more in keeping with the software design though you’d have to open the software with all the events, wait for them to load then move them, then close the library you moved them to. Probably the safest idea so thank you.

I did read on page 23 of this guide it’s not a good idea to move events between libraries too many times though they don’t say why:

    https://www.10dot1.co.uk/content/FCPXInASharedEnvironment_FINAL.pdf

Personally I’d like to see a modern day “Event Manger X” that safety suppresses the loading of unneeded events. I never bought the old one as it was easier to move them my self 😉

    Cheers

  • Yep, got all that per my original post, thanks for confirming

More trying to work around the catch 22 that you have to load all events in a library even if you are only working on one event. This is spendy, less stable and I have a 1000+ hours of HD footage and some RED. If you try and work around this by creating separate libraries with individual events inside each one, you end up duplicating media if you edit from different libraries and can no longer share keywords. That’s no good either, making this new design somewhat ill conceived.

I’m looking for a work around. I’ve literally moved the events out of the “Package Contents” kinda like “Event Manager X” used to do and it leaves some remnant of the Events when you re-open the library, basically an index with no media. Seems like the library itself is keeping an index of the events created in the “CurrentVersion.flexolibrary” file. Perhaps this doesn’t really matter, I need to test it some more and don’t know a lot about the software coding so can’t speak to the shortcomings, if any, of this technique.

Regarding my other question about Sharing Events etc between different systems, I’m curious if anyone else out there uses the swapping of the “CurrentVersion.fcpevent” file to more efficiently share edits. So far it’s working great on 10.1 but totally open to other techniques.

July 2, 2014 at 1:08 am in reply to: Keyword Anomaly w Multicam Clips?

Just tried that Andy no luck so far. I’ve also tried cueing to center of clip, selecting different clips within the multicam, changing the focus inside mutlicam clip to different “layers”

Just “cleared selected ranges” that seemed to work! Even though I didn’t visually see any range selected think that was it… Thank you Craig reading your comment made me try that

    Appreciate helping a FCPX newbie
