That camera records in AVCHD, which Final Cut Pro should be able to import via the Log and Transfer window (here’s a page from Apple with information for reference).
There shouldn’t be a problem unless these are pre-Intel Macs. Shooting in SD won’t help since it’ll probably record in the same compression either way.

That looks great… really, great work can be done with just about anything if you’ve got the time and skill.
When I need simple 3D elements and text like that, I use Blender. It doesn’t get much cheaper than free.

A Google search brought up MANY discussions about this; the consensus is that the drive orientation makes no difference whatsoever with modern hard drive technology. As long as the drives have good airflow for cooling and aren’t suspect to excess vibration, it doesn’t matter what way they point.
As Bob said, many people have had issues with Lacie drives. I used a Firewire external Lacie for a while and it would randomly disappear upon booting my system; after a restart it’d be fine. Some people love ’em though. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn’t bet my life on them.

Sounds like motion blur in After Effects may help make your animation more smooth and less jittery like the old “Take on Me” video (a classic, by the way).
In Photoshop, you’re doing the same basic thing they did in that video with each frame hand-drawn, giving no interpolation or motion blur… kind of like a really fast shutter speed on a camera. Adding motion blur in Photoshop would not do the same thing. Using masks in After Effects will make it more natural and easy to tweak as well. Also, ditto on everything Dave said.

Ahh, the sheep wipe… I have heard much about it but have never seen it personally. I do remember watching a dance program in a church several years ago where they used snowflake wipes between every shot… in the middle of the summer!?

Do you have the rack portion of the switcher? That’s just the controller and I doubt you’ll be able to get it to light up by itself. Maybe someone else knows a way to hack it together?

Oh, and I forgot to mention the best part… the “suite of video toasters” and the running man wipe. That was classic.

I guess I’m fortunate that I started in the non-linear days, but I have tons of respect for the “old school” editors.
Only time I touched a linear edit suite was in college; we had to edit on them for the first semester and move to Avids later on. The linear systems were so decrepit and unreliable that I secretly snuck all my tapes home and edited on FCP, and dubbed them back later. I spent about 2 hours editing each of my projects, while it took everyone else about 6-12 hours if they ever finished. Of course the quality of mine was a couple generations better, so it might have looked suspicious, but I made straight As on all of the projects.
I do certainly appreciate the artistry and pre-planning necessary for a linear edit. I wonder if there would be no such thing as modern reality TV if everything had to be edited in linear sequence instead of whittling down hours of random footage into a story in a non-linear timeline. Maybe we’d be better off that way?
