Yeah, really either would work great.
I’ve been using lots of 30p lately since it gets rid of the interlaced video look, works great in post, and doesn’t flicker quite as much as 24p with fast pans/motion. However, 24p is infinitesimally more cinematic. If it’s not a run & gun situation you may go for it instead.
Honestly, your audience almost certainly won’t notice a difference regardless.

Nope, 30D has no video capability. No workarounds.
If you want an affordable SLR that also produces good 1080p30 video, the flavor of the month is the Canon T2i. Just got mine and I’m lovin’ it so far.

Man, I wish I could have gotten to NAB to see that this year, though I suppose it’s just a mock-up?
From some other forum searching, it looks like the AG-AF100 will be in the $6K range. Supposedly the issues of aliasing with the Lumix sensor are going to be overcome, and it will have uncompressed HD-SDI out. From what I’ve seen, the 4/3″ mount will let you use just about any lens you can imagine (Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Leica, PL mount, and almost anything else).
Not the perfect camera for all uses, but It’s coming very close.

That’s very impressive. As a Panasonic guy, I’d be all over it if I hadn’t just bought my Canon T2i this week.
At this point, it doesn’t look like RED’s Scarlet will have much of a demand when it comes out. The DSLRs and stuff like this have eaten up the low end of the market.

My job description originally said “Video Editor.” Quite honestly, that’s only a tiny fraction of what I do, and if I really only edited on an Avid like I learned in college, I’d be nearly useless.
I’ve taught myself After Effects, repaired and built computers, developed graphics skills with everything from iPhone apps to websites to billboards, hung projectors, directed cameras, repaired, bought, and sold equipment, and just about anything else you can think of; all while on the job as an “editor.”
Whenever I do something outside of my area of expertise, I consider it a challenge to be conquered. And, I think most employers appreciate that. Learn to love it.

Seems that I remember Apple having some legal troubles with the Beatles’ Apple Records, so that wasn’t the most original name ever, really. Maybe unusual for computers, but not totally original.

It totally depends on what the subject, intended goal, and circumstances are.
I just put together a 2 minute montage this morning, maybe took me three hours. I also cut a 2 minute promo that maybe took half an hour. The promo took around an hour for me to shoot with many takes for the talent, while the montage was mostly b-roll and stills that I didn’t shoot, so I had to weed through them and find the good ones.
For me, documentary/reality TV type stuff has always taken me the longest to cut, since you’re finding the story in a pile of disjointed elements. Anything that is scripted/planned ahead generally edits itself.

Since you gave all of that background info, is your issue with this particular shot or does every shot from the 5D stutter on your setup?
If the issue is just this shot only, did you have a lens with IS turned on? I haven’t had a problem with it, but some say that it makes slow pans look strange sometimes, so try turning it off.
If it’s an issue with every shot from the 5D, I’d investigate your hardware setup. Are you editing with the Macbook Pro’s internal drive? It might help if you edit from an external FW800 or eSATA drive at the least.
What NLE are you using? Does it always have issues with Prores?

Fill Left duplicates the left audio channel for both left and right, and Fill Right obviously duplicates the right channel. In your case, I think that either would work. Both of your channels are exactly the same, they’re just out of phase. It wouldn’t matter which one you duplicate.
I also often use it to center up the audio when I plugged a mic into a single channel on the camera. If I can see my audio levels on what Premiere interprets as the left channel, I just drop Fill Left on there and it’s the fastest way to fix it without needing to get into the Audio Mixer panel.

I don’t have any firsthand experience of the performance difference between the Nehalem and older systems. However, make sure you get more than 8GB of RAM if you go with a dual quad. From what I understand, After Effects needs at least 2GB per core to really perform at full potential, so 16GB of RAM wouldn’t be out of line.
