I can’t believe this simple little tool hasn’t been implemented in Premiere? All we need is a mute button on the source/viewer window… so simple. Put one right next to the ‘frame-grab’ button – both of about equal importance.
I’m editing a documentary with many hours at the moment, a lot of surfing footage too, and when i’m not going through interviews or clips that have sound i’m interested in, i’d love to listen to music whilst I trim my clips…
Seems like a pretty huge oversight on Premiere’s behalf from what I can see…
And as for talk of whether a professional shoot has audio on its b-roll or not is just irrelevant. I’ve edited projects in the commercial world that have audio on the b-roll. And when it comes to documentary, frankly I think you’d be silly to turn your audio off on your camera because you’re saying to yourself ‘right, now i’m shooting b-roll – so audio doesn’t count’. In documentary you never know what you’re going to end up using, or what might end up being that magic moment, and sometimes sound-bytes captured through crappy in-camera mics can produce something usable, if not important for your film.
Anyway, rant over… sorry – obviously I just can’t listen to tunes and it’s bugging me now…

Yeah the Lacie drives work well too, and perhaps I just need to buy one of their 10TB externals instead of bothering with cloud storage….
I forgot to mention that my brother will be the one uploading the footage from Australia, not me from the road, so that makes that angle plausible, but it’s whether or not its even a viable option.
What do other people do when backing up large projects with high shooting ratios??

December 16, 2015 at 6:46 pm in reply to: Best Cloud Storage for Independent Filmmaker – 10TB RequiredHey Roger,
Thanks for reply.
Yeah I have been making double copies on external hardrives – and I anticipate buying one of those 10TB external drive things from Lacie or whoever when it comes time to edit the film.
However, I just want to back up all that footage one more time on the cloud, and do so relatively cheaply (the hardrives are costing me a lot as it is, and then there is the thousands of dollars to buy the 10TB ext hardrive down the line for editing).
I do not anticipate ever having to download the footage from the cloud.
I just want it there as a fail-safe, just in case things hit the fan… y’know.
I’ve looked at some reviews, but I just thought there might be some people out there who have done something similar.
Thanks again mate…

Thanks Todd,
Thats awesome, will try it out.
Much appreciated.

Thanks Ken and Todd – both of your advice has been really informative and helpful.
I know I’m asking a lot, and there’s never a perfect camera, I’m still a little while off buying, but want to make the best-informed approach possible.
I guess the majority of the shooting that I intend to do will be tripod based, incuding PTC’s, timelapses, surfing, wildlife, interviews etc… however, there will without a doubt be times when things will become spur of the moment, and it’ll be run and gun – very often the most gripping stuff in docos in my humble opinion.
Like you said Todd, there’s no way I’m hauling a monitor along with me, ha, so that SDoF has really got the potential to be tricky, but ooohh… it looks so good when its done properly.
I only discovered the Sony F3 after I made this post, and well, it looks like a brilliant camera for someone in my position. At this stage out of my own budget… but we shall see.
I think in reality Ken’s suggestion of bringing both a DSLR as well as a proper video camera will be the best idea, like you said – a good workhorse as well as one for the beauty shots / stills for promotion.
I’m interested to see what other adventurous filmmaker’s strategies are, i’ll keep researching…

Cheers guys… all great ideas..
I’ll have a play around with a few of the suggestions – awesome!

yeah right… well that makes me look a tad silly.. ha.
I had already done that, its just I then get a green render line above the clip, so i thought there may be a better solution…
Thanks for the help… sorry if it was obvious answer!!

Thanks Bret,
This did cross my mind and I have run a head cleaner, through to no avail.
Will continue to research solutions… fingers crossed!!

Thanks a lot David – that was really helpful – turns out that in some of the instances the clips weren’t being shortened from the original duration (ie before I added the transitions)… others I had to use the playhead like you said…
cheers!

Thanks David,
I have been trying a few different settings and havn’t had any luck so far – but as you said, trial and error.
I realise its not ideal to have all these different formats, but unfortunately there’s not a lot I can about it at this stage.. ha..
I shall carry on and hopefully have some luck, thanks for your time…
