Hey Ben
I use the Blackmagic DVI to SDI converters. I don’t see them in the current product page at BMD but they do have the HDMI to SDI which would work just as well and embed the audio in the SDI.

Had the same problem on my iMacs. Upgraded to osx 10.8 and the problem disappeared.

You’ll need an audio delay for sure

To set total dots use a vertical burst. Alternating one pixel on and one off to create vertical lines. This must be in the native resolution of the projector. Adjust total dots and you’ll see bands of vertical noise, each adjustment will either add or subtract a band. Adjust until you have 1 big noisy field then adjust fine sync until the burst pattern is solid.
What you’re doing is setting up the projector to display the exact number of pixels the source is sending. The fine sync then makes sure that the source and the projector are starting each pixel at the same spot.
All of this goes out the window if you feed dvi which has its timing in the signal.

Where is the show? I probably know someone who can take care of that for you. 1603 is VERY easy to operate, if you can run an iPro then you can probably run one of these. There are also plenty of guns for hire who can run a screen pro plus.
Give me some details, I can probably help.

For live events most production companies use Playback Pro by DT Videolabs. Simple to use and since it uses the QuickTime engine to playback media it will play any file that you have the codec for. they also make a small USB controller that gives you the ability to select and roll/kill clips. Easy to set next to the atem desk.
Simple compact solution would be a Mac mini with an external thunderbolt ssd drive to put the media on. (that way it’s not on the same drive as osx) I would also get the external optical drive from apple as well since the minis don’t have a DVD drive anymore. Download a free copy of Handbrake so when someone hands you a DVD you can rip it to the PBP system so you have reliable cuing and count out.
Rack it up in the Sonnettech Mac mini rack adaptor and you’re all set.

Cool. I’m in Boston but our shop is in DC, we also have a demo room there if the client wants to preview content. It’s tight with the ceiling height but we should be able to hang the screen there. We own all the necessary polarization filters, projectors and equipment to do it all in digital HD.
You can email me if you want to connect directly. matt at icenineproductions dot com

I know that I’m a little late to the party but my company specializes in staging HD/Widescreen events. I’m sitting behind an 18′ x 91′ screen as I type this!
Let me know if you’re still interested in answers to these questions or if I can help out on another event.

Your welcome, sharing info is what the board is all about.
A long throw lens does help lessen the angle of attack on the screen which helps preserve polarity. Of course we all know how many shows allow us enough room to do long throw RP. The Macy’s show was done with .8 lenses. There was a slight dropoff in the 3D effect around the edges of the screen but it wasn’t too bad at all. Since the media usually has the important content in the center the overall effect was preserved. I’ve also used a 2D to 3D convertor that allows input of a single HD/SDI and produces a L/R output. We ran some old powerpoint slides through it and it produced a great 3D effect.
Where are you located? It may be possible to do a proof of concept for your client depending on the geography restrictions.
Let me know if you need more info or would like to proceed.
