What are you trying to do that your current Mac is just too slow for?

How much RAM do you have?

How big are your hard drives? How many? What configuration (i.e. single internal drives, internal RAID configuration, external drives, etc.)

    What video board(s)?

How does it look when you view the quicktime files?

It looks to me like your G4 is the weak link in your current chain. I’d upgrade that first, but I’d seriously beg, borrow or steal enough money to at least move up to an Intel Mac. Even an intel iMac would do better than a G5.

DVCPRO HD would probably work just fine.

Since we have an active G5 thread here, I thought I’d piggyback and ask a question:

Is it possible to use a G5 with a BlackMagic or Aja board to capture HD-SDI (720p) to Prores? I’m looking to hack together a cheap direct-to-disk acquisition solution. A couple of G5 XServes would be even better, as they would only take up a couple of rack slots.

(Yes, I know. No Intel, no Snow Leopard, no FCS3, yada yada yada. No need to reply if you’re just going to tell me it’s not the BEST idea, but go ahead and reply if you KNOW that it just can’t work. Acquisition would be the ONLY purpose for these machines.)

I just assume, if a thread stops abruptly after a suggestion, it must have worked. 😉

  • I guess you missed the point where I said Canvas can not give you an accurate depiction of your video. That fact is even more pronounced if you have the canvas sized to anything other than 100%.

Probably because Compressor replaces video first, then audio. And if you’re using the same file as your source and destination, by the time it gets to audio, you’ve already overwritten it.

  • Don’t judge the quality of your video by what you see in the Canvas. You’re viewing interlaced material (DV footage) on a progressive display (your computer monitor). The only way to see what you’re really getting is by connecting a broadcast monitor to a broadcast video board.

(But at least make sure you have your Canvas magnification set to 100%. That’ll get you as close as it’s able.)
