I found a cheap used first-generation BlackMagic Decklink HD card that records to Prores and has XLR audio input. I can capture 720p direct to the internal drives without RAID. I’ve even had luck capturing straight to an external USB drive.

Always use the newest version of Final Cut. Get the JVC camera.

Keep your eyes open for a used BlackMagic HD Extreme board. I found one for < $200 on eBay and it works great!

Why do you assume he’s NOT working on the pro apps?

It could be contention on the USB bus, the USB interface in your external drive, the drive’s write buffers (or lack thereof) or even the drive itself.
