January 21, 2011 at 11:35 pm in reply to: What besides disk speed causes dropped frames during capture? One other thing, I noticed while I was capturing. At first the capture preview was on-sync with the source, but latency increased over time until the dropped frame message popped up and it pooched the capture.
I’m testing with BlackMagic’s Media Express now and it doesn’t look like it’s having that increasing latency issue.
Has there been a Final Cut update in the last couple weeks? (I’m still on v6)

I didn’t reinstall the drivers when I reinstalled the OS — I downloaded ’em fresh from BlackMagic.
Do the RT settings figure into the mix when you’re doing Log & Capture (cause that’s where I’m getting the dropped frames)? But here’s the settings:
Safe RT (Will change to Unlimited)
Scrub High Quality
Playback Video Quality: Dynamic
Playback Frame Rate: Full
Multiclip Playback
Record to tape: Full QualityReinstalling Drivers…

“The only thing I have on auto is White Balance.”
Turn that off. Get a white card (and perhaps a set of warm cards), set your white balance before you shoot then leave it alone. I doubt that that’s what’s causing your issues, but it’s just generally good practice.

Wow, you’re getting that shallow DOF at 5.4? The footage you posted looks more like it was shot wide open in low light, which would account for the noise.

It’s pretty normal for acquisition from an HD-SDI source to come in with 16 audio channels. Since they’re empty just delete channels 3-16 and be done.

What are you shooting? How is it lit? What camera settings? (i.e. frame rate, shutter, etc.)

Aha! It’s been so long since I did the original spec work for our systems and I had a haunting fragment of a memory that there was something out there for that.
Thanks for that link!
Now, does anyone have a link to a third-party version that doesn’t cost 50 gazillion dollars? 😉

Awesome! I would LOVE to be able to use one of my 250’s as a “rover cam” in our church services, yet still have full CCU control + tally. Please post back their response regarding any “sans-sled” studio adapter possibilities.

Sounds like you should take your 250 with you to NAB — kill two birds with one stone.

I built high-end PC systems for myself for almost 15 years (the first system I built was a screaming 486 with a HUGE 2GB SCSI drive!!)
When I finally had enough of constant driver updates, swapping flaky video boards, MOBOs, power supplies, driver controllers, etc, etc, ad nauseum, a friend of mine talked me into buying a Mac.
I’ve never touched a PC since. Can’t even remember the last time I cracked the case in my Pro. And I LIKE it that way!
The mere thought of trying to hack a hacked PC into running Mac OSX just seems like a tremendous waste of time to me. And even if I had the time to return to constant “futzing”, I would never, EVER put myself in a position where I DEPENDED on a Frankensteined box for my livelihood. My time if far more valuable than any perceived savings. Besides, any perceived savings is going to be quickly eaten up by lost time and additional money in add-ons/upgrades necessary to keep the box on life-support.
But hey, if you’ve got nothing better to do with your time then knock yourself out.
