Looking at the date, I’m assuming I’m to late, but for next time you can split the layer (ctrl, shift, d) where you want the expression to start, and apply the expression on the new layer.

You can also look into expression controls. You can basically make an on off switch for your expression and key that control. About a 1/3rd of the way down this page:

umm.. yea.. just figured it out. I’ll share..

so I had the null in the box_precomp, and it should have been in the comp containing the box_precomp. My purpose of precomping the sides is even unnecessary now. perfect.

Great script. I’m having an anchor point issue.

I’ve precomped my cube, added a 3D null as layer 7, and parented the 6 sides (also precomps) to the null.

The null is not in the center of my cube so as I rotate the null, the cube swings rather then spins.

How do I get the null anchor to site perfectly in the center?

side_precomps are 300×300 square px
cube_precomp is 720×480 square px
