There’s a few ways to do it. One would be to place the clip on the top-most video layer in the edit window and then use a composite mode to superimpose it on all the track layers below it.

It’s also theoretically possible to do this in the Data Burn-In window (though I’ve never tried it). And you could also do it as a Track matte, applying it as a Timeline grade.

I think method #1 is probably the best choice.

In User Prefs, choose System and check off “Show Multi-User Login Window.” Then the program will behave as before.

When you’re in a project, you should be able to hit the Home button (house, lower right corner) and you should see the Project Manager window, with a button in the upper right to get to the Database. Once there, all the backup/restore functions should still work.

Zero color shifts noticed here. I have encountered occasion very subtle sluggishness on some level changes when knobs are moved, but it’s unpredictable and doesn’t seem to happen more than 4 or 5 times a day. For all I know, this could be OS related and might have nothing to do with Resolve.

Can you upgrade to Resolve 12.5?

Highly-compressed formats like MTS were generally intended to be delivery formats, not editing formats.

My advice would be to transcode them to ProRes or DNxHD, which is a lot easier to deal with in post.

I’m not convinced any LUTs are needed. I think it’s possible just to color correct the two cameras to match each other… within the limitations of how the material was shot and the qualities of each camera. Matching cameras is a major job of the colorist, and unfortunately it’s not a “push a button and go” operation. There’s a lot of variables involved.

    Dave asked:
“I haven’t sent any logs to BMD. Is there a log within Resolve that I can access?”

Yes. Go to boot drive -> Library -> Application Support -> Blackmagic Design -> DaVinci Resolve, then run CaptureLogs. This will create a document that can be sent to BMD. (This is for Mac OSX — not sure exactly where it is for Windows.)

I wish there was a Troubleshooting section in the Resolve manual that would cover this stuff.

Pages 865-877 in the 12.5 manual.

If I had two versions of a show — one with commercial breaks and one without — I’d just duplicate the timeline, which automatically brings over all the corrections, and then cut out the commercial breaks in the Edit page. It’s easy to do.

On many of the syndicated shows I’ve worked on in the past 25+ years, we’d have a North American version with 2-second commercial blacks, and then a “BBC” version that would eliminate all blacks, requiring us to figure out how to pull up the fades and cut & mix the audio in such a way that the break was undetectable. It can be done… it just takes time. It’s much easier today than it was 10-15 years ago.

BMD’s recommend Resolve hardware specs on their website are pretty specific. I personally don’t think an iMac is ideal for Resolve (for a lot of reasons), but it can work with HD-only material and very fast drives. The lack of upgradability is a big concern.

My main advice is that sometimes, SIMPLICITY is a better tactic. It’s not a point of seeing how many nodes you can use — I think a wiser move is to do it all in the FEWEST nodes possible. I don’t dispute that tracking windows are mandatory for some jobs, but for an interview, it boils down to available time and budget. The danger is that you can start pulling the wings off flies on this stuff. As our brothers in the VFX business would say, “endless pixel F-ing.” I would say I average a solid 8-10 nodes on many shots, but I’m not afraid to go well beyond that if the project really deserves it. But there are also shots where you can knock it out in 3 or 4 nodes and just move on. There is a point where you have to let go and not noodle it to death. (There are always exceptions, like high-budget commercials and massive Hollywood features.)

As far as the crashes go, that’s totally unacceptable and I’m very sympathetic. As Hector asked above: what kinds of GPUs are you using? How do the SSDs rate on the BMD Speedtest utility? How are you monitoring? Which version of Desktop Video is running in the background? Are the GPUs running on the latest firmware?

I would also send BMD Support crash logs and get them involved ASAP.

Dave, have you sent any crash logs over to BMD Support? I bet that would yield some answers.
