Noah,
Thanks for the tips. Monitor and tripod are covered. I’ve got plenty of experience with the DVX-100 and am excited about the transition to the HVX. And I’ve got the HVX book en route. I’m specifically curious about editing solutions on FCP and any specific settings users recommend for the scene files and 720p vs. 1080i/24p. I keep hearing that 720pN is the way to go, with no noticeable quality drop from 1080i/24p. Anyway, I was just hoping for any references to get me started while I’m waiting for my book in the mail. 🙂
Thanks again,

Thanks for the heads up. I just remember reading a great tutorial about getting good slow-mos from 40% 29.97 footage on a true 24p timeline — that slowing it down 40% matched up each field of 29.97 video with a frame of 24p… Anyway, I’ll keep searching.
Thanks again.

Never was able to get the crystal clear slo-mos I was hoping for, despite playing with all the interlacing settings. I do wonder if it’s in the import of the settings. I imported an entire sequence of b-roll as 1 long clip, even though some of that sequence was shot 24pa, some 29.97. And with “remove pulldown” turned on, I wonder if that affected how Vegas handled the 29.97 footage embedded in a file that, at the beginning, is flagged as 24pa. Regardless, the footage had notable interlacing in a progressive project. I’ve already turned it on, but might run some tests on importing and settings to figure out dealing with this in the future.
Again, thanks very much for your help and time.
Best wishes,

I was very thankful for the information that he offered, and I expressed that to him. I had a specific question that wasn’t answered and don’t think I can be blamed for asking the question again, if only so that perhaps a member of the general public might have been able to offer help. It was in no way disrespectful toward DSE — merely an attempt to use this forum as it was intended. When you ask for help, and don’t get a question answered, you ask again, hoping perhaps someone else who’s been in your shoes might provide some insight.
Best wishes,
– Marc

Jerry,
I don’t believe I was being stubborn.
From your post, it seems you don’t understand the question I was asking. I’m quite familiar with 24p/23.976 footage and timelines. And I have a great deal of respect for DSE. My issue was with de-interlacing the interlaced footage. Vegas does NOT make it all come out ok if the de-interlacing properties are improperly set. Several tests have proven this to be true. In trying to avoid having to conduct even more tests, I wanted to rely on the collective wisdom of COW users and was merely trying to find out what experience others had with those settings and if they recommended none, blended or interpolate for getting a 40% slo-mo off of 29.97 interlaced footage.
Honestly, it seemed as though this post had been closed. I appreciate you sticking up for DSE, a guy whose opinion I respect greatly. I don’t appreciate you making a personal statement by calling me stubborn when you apparently didn’t understand the intent of my original post.
Regardless, best wishes.

It’s not that I didn’t want to accept what you offered. I do appreciate your help. Merely, I asked some specific questions about settings that I didn’t feel like you answered. I’ve read tutorials on this before but did some searching and couldn’t find them. I remember those tutorials mentioning specific de-interlace settings, which is why I was hoping for more specificity. Again, thanks for your help. 🙂

I think you’re mistaken.
There is not a default de-interlace setting on Vegas’s 24p timelines. And I’ve noticed that the de-interlace setting DOES matter. So I’m merely asking other people which setting they’ve experienced the most success with so that I don’t have to spend a lot of time testing different settings, outputting to a tape to view on a monitor, etc. etc. etc. Telling me that all properties will simply “fall into place” isn’t effective, because the properties aren’t default and it matters what the properties are set to.

You say to let Vegas manage it based on the settings in the Project properties. That’s been my question all along — what should those settings be?? There’s not a default blend/interpolate/none de-interlace setting for timelines — the setting simply carries over from what you’ve previously used. Hence I need to know what that setting should be to get the proper effect. I’ve played around somewhat using blend/interpolate/none and have noticed a difference between each setting, so I shouldn’t just ignore it. I just wonder what someone else who’s done this before has found to give the best results.

Yep, I firewired the footage in.
I’m not sure I follow what you mean by “let Vegas manage the i to p for you.” How else would I do it? I merely need to know the project de-interlace settings and whether the track media needs to be set to resample or not. I’m guessing it’s force resample, blended de-interlacing, but wondered what other people out there have had success with.
Thanks,
Marc
