David, sorry to be a dolt, but can you expain how to clone my system onto the external drive and then boot off of that? And Alan, yes, my first temptation is just to try using the external drive and see what happens.

Hmm. What would be the solution here? I have a dual drive G4, can I boot off of one drive?

Oops, I thought I did post this on the ‘basic’ forum, guess I switched over without noticing. Thanks for all the info everyone. Even though I love media 100 and will certainly keep using it (as I have 3 systems spread out around L.A.), I am excited about being forced to learn FCB. As to sharing M100 with FCB on one computer, will it work if FCB lives in an external LaCie drive? Will that function properly?

Michael, that interests me too. I just worked on a project that was shot in HD, and I was given an SD transfer to work with. I thought the picture quality was not too great either. It seemed vaguely pixelated. I attributed this to the down conversion (thinking it always looks this way no matter what), but perhaps it is in the method or program used?

Just thought I’d throw my 2cents in. I’ve been using Media100 exclusively since 1999. The only time I’ve ever experienced any problems or “meltdowns” was when my hard drive was antiquated and not capable of keeping up with the media100 system. Once I updated the hard drives, I’ve never had a problem, no matter what length of program I’m working on.

Thanks again Floh, this is a great help. I checked on the BitVice, looks great, not sure that I can afford it right now though. Question: I’m going to buy a new system for my home office, as the system I own right now is staying in another location for a long job. If I buy BitVice for one system, can I use the same program on my other system, or will I be forced to purchase a second program? This information might be available on their website, I didn’t really look.

Ah ha. Thanks Floh. “By reference”. Will that be as good a quality as a quicktime movie? I am exporting and encoding a 1 hr 50 min. piece, which I want to jam onto a dvd-5. I already exported it as a quicktime movie (which took 3 days), and now I’m having trouble getting it to look good using compressor. This is the first time I’ve done this, so I’m not sure I’m choosing the correct min. and max bit rates.

Yikes!! Thanks for those two methods. Looks like I’ll be spending just as much time either adapting or re-digitizing (a few hours of footage, that’s why I wanted to find a trick.) Good to know there is a solution.
