I stand by my earlier statement – tiffs are better to work with and should always be used in film editing, not jpgs.

of course, if you aren’t concerned for the quality of your work, no, I suppose it doesn’t matter. Many people do whatever they like, regardless of the discernible difference in quality – they just aren’t of a mind to do the best they can.

while I appreciate you taking the time to reply you are incorrect about using jpgs vs tiffs. jpgs do deteriorate over time, every time they are opened; one should never ever use a jpg in a film project. I did not know this at the time I made these shorts or I would not have done it this way but in any event, as noted, I am going to replace them w/higher quality photos anyway.

please do some further research on why it is better to use tiffs and never jpgs in any film project.

that being said, your suggestion for replacement sounds quite workable and is along the lines of what I was thinking but for whatever reason could not hash it out. I appreciate this very much.

First of all, I appreciate all the info and responses here.

The main focus for this upgrade is to avoid having to re-install my apps, as well as of course, not to lose anything (like my mail). That is why I chose the disk image route.

But according to one of the responses above, re-installing a disk image will also copy the OS, is that correct? (I might have asked this previously, and somewhere it was answered so sorry if that’s the case)

So it’s been recommended that I use Time Machine to back up instead – and then retrieve my files there. But is this going to save me from having to re-install all my apps? would I be able to just copy my hard drive before the upgrade and then copy it over to the new upgraded os and therefore NOT have to re-install all my software?

Somehow this has become more convuluted than necessary. Let’s try and keep it simple. Please.

I’ve never used Time Machine and really didn’t plan on doing that. I thought the disc image would copy back onto my machine regardless of what os was on here.

that is, I thought I’d just download the OS (El Capitan is the one I’m planning on installing), install it, and yes, I would assume my drive would be wiped out so that’s when I thought I’d be opening the disk image I copied and just re-copy everything onto the new OS.

Does it not work this way?

the way I am now understanding it, the disk image brings the old OS along with it? then wtf is the point of making it in the first place…..arghhhhh

browsing the info about Time Machine just now, it appears I can select what is to be copied? is that correct? would I be able to just copy my entire drive? I thought that was what the disk image did – but whatever – which is better?

then when I do a restore to the upgraded mac os – everything will copy over – but now the new q is does it matter about the older os on the Time Machine copy? that’s not going to interfere, or reinstall itself, right?

The colour dropper doesn’t work when using the various filters and I get random crashes here and there. I have auto-save set for every 20 minutes. Other than that, works just fine.”

thanks for this info – I’ve decided to go ahead and update my os, as it’s just time, period. I figure I’ll have to learn Premiere, since I have it in CS6 (not cloud) but would like to keep my FCP around because it’s just so easy, fast and concise.

hmm…. so you’re saying that whatever kept it from working in earlier Mac Os updates post-Snow Leopard, now no longer effects FCP v 6?

and no, I always rip that bandage off – so you got 2 strikes there – care to go for 3?? ha!

oops – forgot – no more space for computers – I have 2 desks already – my workstation has 2 monitors, a 21 and a 22, it’s crowded – the other one has my notebook and a photo scanner, no room there either – so it’s not an option to get a 4th computer (yeah, I still have a 3rd 10″ windows machine I never use)

I’m thinking about doing a partition on my iMac, which is my editing workstation. I’ve never partitioned before, much less to run 2 dif operating systems and someone else said – just run a legacy version on one of them

but how would that work, the partition aspect? am I going to be logging in and out to diff systems?

If need be, I can go on over to another forum – no problem – let me know –

I didn’t know that about FCP7 since I’m not using it – can’t believe I might have to cave and go to X, wow. sooner or later, it had to happen, I suppose.

I do also use Avid Media Composer but haven’t run into the same issues.

had considered partitioning in the past but have never done it for whatever reason.

I do have Premiere in Adobe 6 but am not on the cloud and am fearful if I start using it, I’ll be forced to at some point.
